One Fenix Down embraces classic 90s JRPG design with turn-based combat, memorable characters, exploration, and an expansive fantasy adventure.

The golden age of 90s Japanese RPGs continues to influence games decades later, and an upcoming indie RPG is leaning heavily into the formula that made the era so memorable.

Classic Final Fantasy games helped define the period with colorful casts, turn-based combat, sprawling worlds, memorable soundtracks, and stories that could begin with a simple personal conflict before eventually growing into a battle for the fate of the entire world. While that style of JRPG never completely disappeared, the distinct charm of the 90s has become much harder to find in modern releases.

That nostalgia has started making a comeback, though. Square Enix is revisiting the classic style with Final Fantasy Resonance, an HD-2D pixel art game scheduled to release this October. One Fenix Down is taking a different approach, but its inspiration is just as obvious. Even its name is a nod to the iconic Phoenix Down item from the Final Fantasy series.

One Fenix Down will launch on Steam on September 28, 2026, bringing its retro-inspired JRPG adventure to PC.

The game follows Fenix Strauss, a young idealist who is dismissed by his militant family as a war-dodger. His life changes after an ancient spirit grants him mysterious powers and delivers a cryptic message about "Fate."

From there, Fenix's search for answers grows into something much larger. He gradually builds a party of companions while becoming caught up in political tensions, conspiracies, and conflicts that extend far beyond his original journey.

The game is clearly aiming for the kind of expansive adventure that defined classic JRPGs, and its feature list reinforces that goal:

- 40+ Hours of Adventure: Explore continents, kingdoms, and other realms throughout a character-driven journey.

- Traditional Turn-Based Combat: A classic combat system enhanced with modern mechanics and three difficulty settings.

- A Large, Evolving Cast: Meet a wide range of characters with their own motivations, goals, and ambitions.

- 14+ Playable Party Members: Rotate characters in and out of the party to experiment with different strategies and team combinations.

- Powerful Abilities and Excedo Skills: Use elemental magic, martial arts, traps, monster abilities, and unique Excedo Skills tied to individual characters.

- Hundreds of Items and Equipment: Discover a large collection of gear, including items hidden throughout the world.

- Nostalgic SNES-Era Audio: Experience a retro-inspired soundtrack featuring guest vocalist Emi Evans.

Combat is where One Fenix Down appears to strike a balance between its classic influences and modern design. The foundation is traditional turn-based combat, but elemental interactions, party synergy, and tactical decision-making add more depth to each encounter.

With more than 14 playable characters available throughout the adventure, party composition will play an important role. Each character brings their own abilities and Excedo Skills, while elemental magic, martial arts, traps, and monster abilities give players plenty of options when building their team.

The broader structure of the game also follows the classic JRPG formula. What starts as a personal journey gradually expands into a much larger story involving different kingdoms, political conflicts, and threats that could affect the entire world.

There is already some momentum behind One Fenix Down. Regalcraft Games' Kickstarter campaign reached its funding goal in just three days in 2024, giving the project the backing needed to continue development.

Players will also have an opportunity to try the game before its full release. One Fenix Down is scheduled to appear during Steam's Party-Based RPG Fest 2026, which runs from September 14 to 21. A demo will be available during the event, giving curious players a chance to experience its take on classic JRPG design.

For players who miss the days when a JRPG meant assembling a party of memorable characters, exploring an enormous world, collecting increasingly powerful equipment, and watching a small personal story evolve into a fight for the fate of everything, One Fenix Down looks like a deliberate return to that formula. It may not recreate the 90s, but it certainly seems determined to bring back what made that era of JRPGs so special.
