Official Announcement: Lord of the Rings: The Wolves of Mordor Is Coming
Standing Stone Games unveils The Wolves of Mordor, bringing Sauron's dark history, werewolf societies, and new adventures to Middle-earth this fall.

Sauron's defeat may have brought an end to The Lord of the Rings saga, but Middle-earth still has countless untold stories waiting to be explored. This fall, fans will venture into one of the darker corners of Tolkien's world with a new adventure centered around the werewolves of Mordor.

Long before he became the Dark Lord who forged the One Ring and ruled from Barad-dûr, Sauron was known by another terrifying title: the Lord of Werewolves. While this part of Tolkien's lore is mainly explored in The Silmarillion rather than The Lord of the Rings, it is now taking center stage in a brand-new expansion set deep within Mordor.

Mordor has always been more than just the volcanic wastelands surrounding Mount Doom. Beyond the familiar landscapes of Gorgoroth lie unexplored regions filled with their own histories, creatures, and secrets. That is exactly where Standing Stone Games is taking players next, moving away from the well-known battlefields of the War of the Ring and into forgotten areas shaped by Sauron's experiments and dark creations.

The Lord of Wolves and the Hidden Secrets of Mordor

This new adventure comes in the form of The Lord of the Rings Online: The Wolves of Mordor, the MMO's next expansion launching this fall. According to an exclusive report from MMORPG.com, the expansion will introduce three new regions of Mordor: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas, and Nan Ogol.

The story will explore Sauron's history as the Lord of Wolves while introducing the Draugardh, an intelligent werewolf society inspired by Tolkien's writings. These creatures will bring a new perspective to Mordor's history, showing another side of the Dark Lord's influence long before the events of the main trilogy.

New Systems and Gameplay Features Arrive

The expansion's biggest gameplay addition is the new Survival Instinct system, an account-wide progression feature designed specifically for the new Mordor regions. Instead of focusing only on traditional level progression, players will unlock new skills, tactical abilities, upgrades, and passive bonuses.

Standing Stone Games has confirmed that Survival Instinct is designed to continue growing beyond this expansion, potentially becoming a long-term progression system for future updates.

The Wolves of Mordor will also introduce the Neighbor system, allowing players to build relationships with NPC companions through housing, gifts, quests, and daily interactions. The feature adds a more personal layer to the MMO experience and expands the social elements that have long been part of The Lord of the Rings Online.

A New Chapter for Lord of the Rings Online

During their journey, players will encounter three different werewolf factions alongside Easterlings, Woses, Gondorian scouts, Elves, and Dunedain. The expansion will feature volcanic mountain regions, while Nan Ogol introduces a prehistoric jungle filled with dangerous creatures and laboratories connected to Sauron's dark experiments.

New three-player and six-player instances, along with a raid planned before the end of the year, will provide additional PvE challenges for longtime players.

More importantly, The Wolves of Mordor appears to represent the beginning of a new era for The Lord of the Rings Online. With Survival Instinct and the Neighbor system designed to expand over time, Standing Stone Games is already preparing for the MMO's 20th anniversary in 2027, including plans to revisit classic content.

For a game approaching two decades of service, The Lord of the Rings Online continues to have an impressive future ahead, with plenty of new stories still waiting to be discovered in Middle-earth.
