Microsoft may be bringing Xbox 360 legacy to PC!
Microsoft aims to revive its legacy library by extending Xbox 360 backward compatibility and Play Anywhere support to PC players.
Microsoft appears to be preparing a major expansion of its Xbox backward compatibility efforts by bringing classic Xbox 360 games to PC. Released in 2005 as the successor to the original Xbox, the Xbox 360 remains Microsoft's best-selling console, moving more than 80 million units worldwide. The system became home to countless fan-favorite titles, including several award-winning exclusives that defined an era.
Report Suggests Xbox 360 Games Are Headed to PCBackward compatibility has been a key part of Xbox's strategy throughout the current console generation. Microsoft has worked to ensure many of its legacy titles remain playable on modern hardware through physical disc support, digital purchases on the Microsoft Store, and Xbox Game Pass. The company has also begun introducing original Xbox titles to PC, with games such as Crimson Skies and Blinx: The Time Sweeper already making the jump.
Report Claims Xbox 360 Games Are Being Prepared for PC
According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft is now exploring ways to extend its backward compatibility program even further by bringing Xbox 360 games to PC. While many Xbox 360 titles are already playable on Xbox Series X and Series S through backward compatibility, the report claims the company is now working to make those games available on Windows as well. Since a large number of Xbox 360 titles have never received PC releases, the initiative could introduce these classics to an entirely new audience. Microsoft is also reportedly in discussions with third-party publishers, who would be able to determine pricing for their respective games.
Xbox Play Anywhere Support Could Be Part of the Plan
Although Microsoft has yet to officially announce the program, the move would align with its recent efforts to expand the availability of original Xbox games beyond consoles. It's also rumored that these releases could support Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players who own a game on Xbox to access it on PC and compatible handheld devices, including the ROG Xbox Ally, at no additional cost.
Bringing Xbox 360 Favorites to PC Could Benefit the Brand
Xbox has faced challenges this generation, trailing both PlayStation and Nintendo in console sales. While Microsoft's strategy of releasing first-party games on competing platforms has helped expand its audience, it has also divided longtime Xbox fans who preferred platform exclusivity. A PC expansion for Xbox 360 classics, however, has been met with far more enthusiasm, particularly among former Xbox owners who have since switched to PC but have been unable to revisit many of their favorite games.
What Could Microsoft's First Wave of PC Classics Include?
The report doesn't reveal which Xbox 360 titles could arrive first, leaving fans to wait for an official announcement from Microsoft. If the initiative moves forward, reviving beloved classics could strengthen Xbox's legacy, reconnect the brand with longtime players, and create a new revenue stream by bringing decades-old favorites to a much larger PC audience.
