Helldivers 2 teasing a terrifying new threat.
The Illuminate have been quiet for months, but Helldivers 2's latest teaser suggests they're about to unleash something terrifying.
Helldivers 2 is preparing to unleash its next major update on August 12, and a new teaser strongly suggests that the Illuminate are about to become a much bigger threat.
The brief trailer features a simple message: "Face the unknown." It then shows a Helldiver-themed teddy bear being pulled into a mysterious tear in space. The bear is violently torn apart by an unseen force before suddenly appearing on a jungle planet. In the reflection of its eye, a tall, rounded alien figure reaches down to pick it up before the trailer cuts to the August 12 release date.
While Super Earth has plenty of enemies to worry about, all signs point toward the Illuminate being behind the strange events.
The third major Helldivers 2 faction has been relatively quiet throughout 2026. The Illuminate have not posed the same level of threat they did during their invasion of Super Earth last year, while players have instead spent much of their time fighting Terminids and taking the battle to the Automatons on Cyberstan.
That could soon change. The lower section of the galactic war map, where Illuminate activity is usually concentrated, currently appears to be in serious trouble, with several planets seemingly swallowed by the mysterious void. The latest teaser could indicate that the Illuminate are preparing a major offensive—and possibly bringing a new type of enemy with them.
Some fans believe the creature shown in the trailer could be a member of a new Illuminate group known as the Cultists. These enemies are reportedly expected to possess powerful abilities, potentially introducing a new style of combat to the faction.
A fresh wave of Illuminate enemies would be particularly welcome because the faction has historically had less variety than the Terminids and Automatons. Additions such as Leviathan ships, Stingray jets, and Fleshmobs have helped expand their arsenal, but players have been waiting for enemies capable of delivering a genuinely frightening experience.
The mysterious void could also have much larger implications. Some players believe the teaser hints at Super Earth itself becoming a target once again, although the teddy bear could instead represent human colonies on the outer edges of the galaxy.
The August 12 update will also coincide with the launch of Helldivers 2's Warhammer 40,000 crossover Warbond. The crossover will introduce three weapons and two armor sets inspired by the iconic tabletop universe. A price has not yet been announced, though it is expected to cost more than the standard $10 Warbond.
With the Illuminate apparently preparing something new, Helldivers may want to report for duty sooner rather than later.
