Facepunch Studios Executive Alistair McFarlane steps down after 11 years.
After 11 years at Facepunch, Alistair McFarlane leaves behind Rust, its community, and a development team he helped shape.
Facepunch Studios is saying goodbye to one of its most familiar faces. Alistair McFarlane, the company's chief operating officer and director, has left the studio after more than 11 years. His departure brings an end to a long career with the developer, during which he played an important role in the growth and continued success of Rust.

McFarlane announced his departure in a post on X, confirming that July 30 was his final day at Facepunch. His career at the studio began in a quality assurance role before he gradually moved into larger responsibilities. He eventually became executive producer on Rust and was often one of the main people representing Facepunch publicly.

In his farewell message, McFarlane described Rust and Facepunch as having taken up a major part of his life. He said leaving the studio was one of the hardest decisions he had made, but he was also proud of what the team had accomplished during his time there.

McFarlane also reflected on the development team behind Rust. The survival game has been supported for more than a decade, with Facepunch regularly releasing updates and new content. According to McFarlane, the team has managed to deliver monthly updates consistently while continuing to experiment with new ideas and improve the game.

He expressed particular pride in the development culture that was created around Rust. Rather than simply looking back at the game's past success, McFarlane highlighted the team's continued effort to keep moving the game forward.

Rust first launched in 2013 and has managed to remain popular for years, something that is not easy for a live-service game. McFarlane credited the game's community as a major reason for its longevity. He noted that Rust is currently reaching some of its strongest player numbers in its 13-year history across multiple platforms.

That continued success makes McFarlane's departure an important moment for both Facepunch and the Rust community. He has been closely connected to the game for much of its existence, and his public presence helped make him a recognizable figure among players.

McFarlane was particularly active on social media and Reddit, where he often interacted directly with members of the community. His willingness to speak openly and occasionally take part in unusual or humorous situations helped make him a popular figure among Rust players.

Earlier this year, for example, McFarlane made headlines after offering to buy Amazon's New World MMO for $25 million. While it was not entirely clear how serious the offer was, the comment quickly attracted attention online.

A few months later, McFarlane also appeared to suggest that Rust 2 could be in development. The comment caused excitement among fans, but Facepunch founder and studio boss Garry Newman later stepped in to dismiss the idea and make it clear that a sequel was not currently being developed.

Despite those memorable moments, McFarlane's departure appears to be driven more by personal reasons than by any major problem at Facepunch. He said he does not currently have a specific plan for what comes next.

After spending so many years focused on Rust, McFarlane explained that the job had naturally taken time away from other parts of his life. He now wants to use some of that time to focus on areas that had been put aside during his long commitment to the game.

For now, McFarlane leaves behind a studio and game that have become major parts of the survival genre. Rust continues to receive regular updates and attract large numbers of players, while Facepunch remains focused on supporting the game.

His departure marks the end of an important chapter, but McFarlane's influence on Rust and its community is likely to remain part of the game's history for years to come.
