The Division Resurgence bombarded with negative Steam reviews.
The Division Resurgence is struggling on Steam, with players criticizing its monetization, progression gates, and mobile-focused design.

The Division Resurgence is receiving a wave of negative Steam reviews just days after Ubisoft brought its free-to-play spin-off to PC. The latest entry in the post-pandemic franchise takes the familiar looter-shooter formula of The Division and adapts it around systems originally designed for mobile players.

The Division Resurgence initially launched on iOS and Android in March 2026 before making its way to PC. Set in New York City, the game puts players in control of a newly activated Strategic Homeland Division agent while offering a PvE campaign, open-world activities, cooperative play, PvP, and the Dark Zone.

Ubisoft has positioned Resurgence as another perspective on the events surrounding the first two Division games. However, its mobile origins remain noticeable, particularly through its progression and monetization systems.

Those systems have become the biggest source of frustration among Steam users. Since its August 5 Steam launch, players have criticized the game's loot boxes, microtransactions, level restrictions, and limits on how quickly rewards can be earned.

Timed progression has emerged as one of the most common complaints. Players say some valuable rewards become increasingly difficult to obtain after they use up their limited daily opportunities, while others argue that basic story progression requires excessive grinding.

The game's Steam rating reflects the backlash. At the time of writing, The Division Resurgence sits at a Mixed rating, with only around 45% of roughly 1,620 user reviews marked positive.

The criticism isn't limited to monetization, either. PC players have complained that menus and interface elements still feel designed around touchscreen controls, while others have pointed to repetitive missions, enemy AI, cutscene quality, and the overall feel of combat.

That has made the game's transition from mobile to PC particularly awkward. Ubisoft previously said that its teams had spent months polishing Resurgence for PC and even added cross-play between PC and mobile.

Instead, some players are questioning why the game needed to make the jump to PC at all.

The situation is especially challenging because The Division Resurgence launched alongside the franchise's previous entries on Steam. Both the original The Division and The Division 2 currently maintain Mostly Positive overall user ratings, giving frustrated players established alternatives.

Those games also offer the more traditional looter-shooter progression that many fans appear to prefer. Several Steam users have recommended that newcomers simply pick up one of the older games during a sale, particularly because The Division 2 continues to receive new content.

Still, a poor Steam launch doesn't necessarily spell the end for The Division Resurgence. Its free-to-play structure gives Ubisoft plenty of opportunities to bring players back through future updates.

The bigger challenge will be addressing complaints that are fundamental to the game's design. Fixing PC interface issues or technical problems is one thing, but changing daily progression limits, monetization, and mobile-inspired reward systems would require much more substantial changes.

For now, The Division Resurgence's first days on Steam suggest Ubisoft has considerable work ahead if it wants the spin-off to compete with the mainline Division games on PC.
