Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake has already attracted an impressive amount of attention, with the game officially passing two million wishlists despite still being some time away from release.

Capcom celebrated the milestone on social media, thanking the two million players who have added the remake to their wishlists. While there is still no release date available, the number shows just how much interest there is in seeing one of the less frequently revisited Resident Evil games receive the modern remake treatment.

Code: Veronica has always occupied an interesting position within the Resident Evil franchise.

Originally released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, the game received positive reviews but did not sell as well as some of the other major entries in the series. The Dreamcast's relatively small audience likely played a role in those sales figures.

Over the years, however, Code: Veronica has developed a loyal following. The game features Chris Redfield and Claire Redfield, two of the franchise's most recognizable characters, while taking players to a number of memorable locations and telling a story that remains important to the wider Resident Evil universe.

The original game has also received some criticism over time. Its controls and certain design decisions can feel dated compared with newer Resident Evil titles, particularly for players who have become accustomed to the smoother gameplay introduced by more recent remakes.

That is one of the reasons the upcoming remake has generated so much excitement. Capcom now has the opportunity to update some of those older mechanics while keeping the elements that made Code: Veronica memorable in the first place.

The team working on the remake also gives fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi and directors Kazunori Kadoi and Yasuhiro Anpo have all previously worked on major Resident Evil remakes.

Their credits include the Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 4 remake, two games that many fans originally questioned the need for. Both projects ultimately proved that Capcom could take an older Resident Evil game, modernize it significantly, and still preserve what made the original special.

The Resident Evil 2 remake in particular demonstrated how much potential there can be in revisiting the series' older games. Meanwhile, Resident Evil 4 showed that Capcom wasn't afraid to make substantial changes when they improved the overall experience.

One example of this was Ashley Graham. In the original Resident Evil 4, Ashley was often criticized by players for being frustrating to protect. The remake completely changed how she functioned, turning her into a much more useful and likable companion while also giving her more personality and development.

That history makes the Code: Veronica remake particularly interesting. The developers have already shown that they are willing to rethink mechanics and characters rather than simply recreating the original game with better graphics.

For longtime fans, the story and atmosphere are among the biggest reasons to be excited. Code: Veronica has a distinctive tone and several locations that stand out from other games in the series.

Bringing those elements into a modern Resident Evil engine could make the remake feel like a brand-new experience while still being recognizable to people who played the original.

There is still plenty we don't know about the project, including exactly how much Capcom plans to change and when the game will launch. However, two million wishlists already suggest that the audience is ready.

After successfully remaking Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4, Capcom has built up a lot of trust among fans. If the studio can bring the same level of care to Code: Veronica, Claire and Chris could be heading toward another major comeback.
