Fans of Tolkien's legendary fantasy world can jump back into one of the franchise's more underrated games, as The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition has been shadow-dropped across multiple platforms.

Warner Bros. and Aspyr Media have released the updated version of the 2011 action RPG with virtually no advance warning. The game's return was leaked through a SteamDB listing in late July, but there was little indication of exactly when the re-release would arrive. Now, War in the North Legacy Edition is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

The original War in the North has developed a strong reputation among Lord of the Rings fans over the years. While the franchise has produced major hits such as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, other recent projects have struggled to meet expectations. The disastrous reception to The Lord of the Rings: Gollum stands in stark contrast to better-received titles such as Tales of the Shire and Return to Moria.

War in the North takes a darker approach to Middle-earth, telling a parallel story that takes place during the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Players aren't controlling Frodo, Aragorn, or the other members of the Fellowship. Instead, the game follows three original heroes fighting to prevent Sauron's forces from overwhelming the northern regions of Middle-earth.

The story centers around Agandaur, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron. As his army prepares to invade the North, three unlikely heroes are drawn into the conflict while Frodo and Sam continue their journey toward Mount Doom.

Players can choose between three distinct characters:

- Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger who specializes in bows, swords, stealth, and precision.
- Andriel, an Elven Loremaster who uses healing abilities and powerful area-of-effect magic.
- Farin, a Dwarven Champion built around heavy armor, durability, and devastating melee attacks.

The Legacy Edition also gives solo players the ability to switch between these three characters during their adventure, offering more flexibility than the original experience.

Like other action RPGs, War in the North features extensive character progression. Players can upgrade skills and abilities while collecting increasingly powerful equipment to customize their preferred playstyle.

Combat also includes some particularly memorable Middle-earth touches. Players can summon Beleram the Great Eagle during battles, allowing the massive creature to attack enemies and provide assistance against Agandaur's forces.

Those forces include plenty of familiar Tolkien threats, from Orcs and Trolls to Wargs and Barrow-wights, giving the adventure a suitably dangerous atmosphere.

The Legacy Edition also supports multiplayer, with up to three players able to tackle the campaign together through online multiplayer or local split-screen co-op. That makes the re-release particularly appealing for fans looking for a cooperative action RPG set within Tolkien's universe.

War in the North isn't the only Middle-earth adventure arriving this year, either. The Lord of the Rings Online is preparing its The Wolves of Mordor expansion for later in 2026, adding three new regions to explore following Sauron's defeat.With War in the North Legacy Edition now available alongside more Middle-earth content on the horizon, Tolkien fans have plenty of reasons to return to the world of The Lord of the Rings before the year is over.
