Publisher Strictly Limited has announced a partnership with Atari to produce new physical releases for Mr. Nutz across classic 16-bit systems. While indie developers occasionally port modern titles to legacy hardware, new physical production runs for vintage consoles remain a scarcity in the gaming landscape.

Pre-orders officially opened in August 2026 for new cartridge runs of both franchise entries across the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, and Mega Drive. Standard editions carry a price tag of 49.99 Euros, with global distribution scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2027.

Debuting during the peak era of 16-bit mascot platformers in the early 1990s, the original title features an anthropomorphic squirrel capable of hurling acorns and hopping across obstacles. Visually drawing comparison to the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, the title weaves secret areas, hidden items, and mechanics heavily influenced by traditional Mario platforming design.

Eccentric art direction and surreal boss encounters helped set the first installment apart from competing mascot titles of its era. Players navigate colorful environments while destroying obstacles, culminating in boss battles against bizarre foes like a headless clown and a creature that hurls its own regenerated eyeballs.

Historically, the sequel Mr. Nutz: Hoppin' Mad never received its planned console release on the Sega Genesis or Mega Drive in the 1990s, appearing only on Amiga via original publisher Ocean France. Strictly Limited's upcoming release represents the first official chance for collectors to own a physical Sega cartridge version of the second title, bringing two historical chapters of 16-bit preservation back to market.
