A new official Wheel of Time release has been confirmed for 2027, with Dire Wolf preparing to bring War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time to tabletop players.

The upcoming strategy board game will be the first officially licensed board game adaptation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time novels. It is being designed to translate the enormous conflict between the forces of Light and Shadow into a tabletop experience featuring familiar characters, locations, events, and factions from across the literary series.

War of the Dragon was launched through Kickstarter in May 2026, where it quickly attracted substantial interest from fans of the franchise. The campaign ultimately raised more than $1.16 million from 6,156 backers, far exceeding its original $50,000 funding target.

The game is being developed around several strategic systems, including tableau building, set collection, action selection, and area control. Players will be able to experience the conflict through two primary game modes called Hero Mode and Epic Mode.

Hero Mode is designed as the more accessible option and focuses on individual heroes and their journeys, making it suitable for players who are newer to the game. Epic Mode expands the scale of the conflict by placing greater emphasis on large armies and the broader war between the Light and Shadow.

The game's story begins around the events of The Shadow Rising, after the fall of the Stone of Tear. From there, players will be able to experience events inspired by the wider Wheel of Time saga, with the game incorporating elements from all 14 main novels.

A major focus has been placed on allowing players to interact with the series' enormous cast of characters. Dire Wolf has described the project as an attempt to create a complete Wheel of Time experience in a box, with numerous characters receiving roles through cards, missions, events, and other game systems.

The game will also allow players to influence how events unfold. Missions and events can recreate important moments from the books while giving players opportunities to create outcomes that differ from the original story.

A four player cooperative version of Hero Mode has also been confirmed. In that format, two players represent the forces of Light while two others take control of Shadow, with teammates sharing resources and working together toward victory. Epic Mode remains designed specifically for two players.

The Kickstarter campaign concluded on June 23, 2026, after attracting more than 6,000 backers from around the world. The Dragon Reborn Edition is expected to reach backers in June 2027, while the retail release is also planned for 2027.

With the crowdfunding campaign successfully completed, War of the Dragon is now moving toward production and fulfillment. For Wheel of Time fans, the upcoming tabletop game will provide a new way to experience Robert Jordan's world while placing the fate of the Westlands directly in the hands of the players.
