WWE has filed a trademark application for "Vice City" just weeks before Rockstar Games is set to give fans a major new look at Grand Theft Auto 6, creating an amusing coincidence between two companies with surprisingly close connections.

Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games recently confirmed that an extended look at GTA 6 will be released on August 27, giving fans their biggest official look yet at the game's version of Vice City ahead of its planned November launch.

Now, WWE has entered the picture. According to a trademark application filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on August 4, WWE is seeking to use the "Vice City" name in connection with wrestling entertainment, live performances, broadcasts, online content, fan clubs, and related services.

The application is currently pending review, but WWE does not appear to be attempting to claim ownership of the term across all forms of entertainment. Instead, the filing is specifically focused on its use within professional wrestling and sports entertainment.

That distinction is important because Rockstar's fictional Vice City and WWE's potential use of the phrase would exist in very different contexts. Rockstar has used Vice City as the name of its fictionalized version of Miami since the release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002, while WWE appears to be interested in the name primarily because of NXT wrestler Lola Vice.

Lola Vice, whose real name is Valerie Loureda, is billed as being from Miami, Florida. Miami is, of course, the real-world inspiration for GTA's Vice City, and WWE has already incorporated the "Vice City" nickname into her character.

The timing is certainly interesting. Lola Vice has been expected to make the jump from NXT to WWE's main roster, potentially receiving a significant push on either Raw or SmackDown. WWE's trademark filing could therefore be connected directly to the wrestler rather than GTA 6.

It also happens to arrive at a time when interest in Vice City is about to explode. GTA 6's extended look is coming to Netflix on August 27, and Rockstar's marketing campaign is expected to ramp up considerably as the game's November release approaches.

The situation is made even more amusing by the corporate relationship between the companies involved. GTA 6 is being developed by Rockstar Games, which is owned by Take-Two Interactive. Take-Two also owns 2K, the publisher behind the WWE 2K franchise.

That connection has already led to some amusing crossover speculation, with fans joking that GTA 6 characters Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos could eventually appear in a future WWE 2K game. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is even featured in WWE 2K26, making the relationship between the two worlds even more entertaining.

For now, though, WWE's trademark application appears to be about Lola Vice rather than GTA 6. The filing isn't likely to interfere with Rockstar's use of Vice City, and fans will continue to associate the name with both Miami and one of gaming's most famous fictional locations.

With GTA 6's biggest showcase yet arriving later this month, however, WWE may have accidentally chosen the funniest possible time to put "Vice City" in the headlines.
