Path of Exile's endgame is about to receive a major overhaul, with developer Grinding Gear Games promising an "extreme shakeup" when patch 3.30 arrives.
The announcement comes as some players have become increasingly frustrated with the current state of loot and endgame activities. A major point of criticism is that too much loot comes from chests rather than enemies, while players also have limited ways to increase the difficulty of activities in exchange for better rewards.
As a result, some players feel that loot has become predictable and less exciting. Knowing roughly what rewards are coming before completing an activity can take away some of the excitement that traditionally comes with a loot-driven action RPG.
Grinding Gear Games is already working on some immediate improvements through upcoming patches, but the developer is planning a much larger overhaul for patch 3.30.
Speaking with Path of Exile streamer Zizaran, Grinding Gear Games developer Christopher "Octavian" Laferriere said that players should expect an "extreme shakeup of the endgame" when the update arrives.
Laferriere explained that patch 3.30 will place a major emphasis on changing the endgame experience, with the team planning to revisit as many existing league mechanics as possible.
The goal isn't simply to rebalance existing systems. Instead, Grinding Gear Games wants to give these mechanics new features and interactions that make them feel different from how they currently function.
One of the reasons this is such a significant undertaking is Path of Exile's age. The game has been running for more than a decade and has accumulated an enormous number of league mechanics during that time.
That wealth of content has helped Path of Exile remain popular, but it has also made the endgame increasingly complicated and potentially repetitive. Even veteran players can continue discovering new mechanics after thousands of hours because there is simply so much content to learn.
According to Laferriere, one of the key goals for 3.30 will be allowing different league mechanics to interact with each other more frequently.
Rather than treating each mechanic as its own isolated activity, Grinding Gear Games wants to create more opportunities for systems to overlap and produce unexpected combinations.
The developer is also reconsidering how items are distributed throughout the game. Currently, certain items are strongly associated with specific league mechanics, meaning players know where they need to go if they're looking for particular rewards.
Patch 3.30 will reevaluate whether some of those items should remain tied to individual mechanics or become available more broadly.
This could help make loot drops feel more spontaneous and less deterministic. Instead of players always knowing what activity they need to complete for a particular reward, the system could create more opportunities for unexpected drops.
Interestingly, this is an area where Path of Exile 2 has already made a strong impression. The sequel places greater emphasis on making loot feel exciting and unpredictable, and some of those ideas could influence the original game's upcoming overhaul.
With patch 3.30 still ahead, Grinding Gear Games has plenty of work to do before the changes arrive. However, the promise of a major endgame redesign suggests the developer recognizes that simply adjusting numbers won't be enough.
If the changes succeed, patch 3.30 could give Path of Exile's decade-old endgame a much-needed reason to feel fresh again.
