Steam is packed with roguelike games, but Anomaly President is quickly attracting attention by combining fast-paced combat with an unexpectedly political premise.

The roguelike genre has become increasingly crowded in recent years, with countless indie developers taking inspiration from popular games such as Hades, Vampire Survivors, and Dead Cells. While the genre's core gameplay loop remains popular, standing out among so many releases can be difficult.

For smaller indie studios in particular, a strong launch can make a significant difference. Positive reviews can help a game gain visibility on Steam, while word of mouth can potentially turn an obscure release into one of the platform's surprise hits.

Anomaly President appears to be benefiting from exactly that kind of early attention.

The game launched on Steam in Early Access on August 3 and has already accumulated a 93% Very Positive rating from more than 600 user reviews. For a new indie roguelike, those numbers represent a particularly strong start.

The game's biggest selling point is arguably its unusual premise. Players take on the role of a presidential candidate during the day before becoming a vigilante fighter at night. Instead of simply battling through procedurally generated environments, players are also tasked with building their political campaign between runs.

The action itself follows many familiar roguelike conventions. Players fight crime syndicates, take on powerful bosses, and collect abilities that can dramatically change how their character performs during a run.

However, Anomaly President adds another unusual element through its anomaly-powered enemies. Defeating these bizarre bosses allows players to steal their abilities, creating opportunities to experiment with different builds and combat strategies.

Players can focus on melee combat, ranged weapons, or powerful anomaly abilities depending on the upgrades and equipment they discover during each run. The combination of weapons, powers, and team members gives each attempt plenty of room for experimentation.

Another major part of the game is its customizable campaign bus. The vehicle acts as a mobile headquarters between missions and introduces management elements that help Anomaly President distinguish itself from more traditional roguelikes.

Players can recruit characters known as "Fluffies," who can assist with everything from campaign activities to combat support. Upgrading the campaign bus and managing these characters adds another layer of progression outside the game's action sequences.

That unusual combination appears to be resonating with Steam users. Anomaly President briefly reached an Overwhelmingly Positive rating, with more than 95% of reviews recommending the game, before settling into its current Very Positive status.

Players have particularly praised the game's colorful presentation, unconventional premise, and combination of action, management, and roguelike mechanics. The range of anomaly abilities and potential builds has also been highlighted as one of the game's strengths.

Of course, Anomaly President is still in Early Access, meaning the developers have plenty of work ahead. Some players have already called for additional content and further balance adjustments. However, the fact that additional content is currently one of the more common criticisms is a positive sign for a game at this stage of development.

There is also currently a launch discount for anyone interested in giving the game a try. Until August 17, Anomaly President is available on Steam for $11.99 instead of its regular $14.99 price.

Whether the game can maintain its momentum remains to be seen, especially as more players discover it and the developers continue expanding its Early Access version.

For now, though, Anomaly President has accomplished something that many new roguelikes struggle to achieve: it has given players a reason to pay attention.
