Microsoft could be preparing for a major change to the way Xbox handles PC gaming. A new report claims that the company may eventually consider moving away from Steam as part of a wider plan to rethink its PC strategy. Nothing has been officially confirmed, but the possibility could have a major impact on how Xbox games are sold and played on PC.

Xbox has already been going through major changes under its new leadership. Asha Sharma became the company's new CEO in early 2026 after spending two years as president of Microsoft's CoreAI division. Her appointment followed the departure of longtime Xbox chief Phil Spencer.

Since taking over, Sharma has faced plenty of questions about the direction of Xbox. One of the biggest topics has been Microsoft's decision to release more games on competing platforms. While Xbox has increasingly supported PlayStation and other platforms, Sharma has recently suggested that the company is listening to fans who want Xbox to place more importance on its own community and exclusive games.

Now, Xbox's approach to PC gaming could also be changing. During a recent episode of the Xbox Two podcast, industry insider Jez Corden discussed the possibility that Microsoft could eventually leave Steam. According to Corden, Microsoft is looking at significant changes to its PC strategy and could put itself in a position where it no longer needs to rely on Steam.

However, Corden made it clear that this is not a confirmed plan. Microsoft has not announced that it will stop releasing games on Steam, and the company could ultimately decide to continue supporting the platform. It is also unclear what leaving Steam would actually mean if Microsoft chose that route.

For example, the company could simply stop releasing future games on Steam while keeping its existing library available. Another possibility would be removing older Xbox titles from the platform, although there is currently no confirmation that Microsoft is considering such a move.

A decision to leave Steam would be a major one. Microsoft has become one of the biggest publishers on the platform, with many of its most important games being released on Steam either at the same time as Xbox versions or shortly afterward.

The Halo series is one of the clearest examples. Halo: The Master Chief Collection arrived on PC in 2019, bringing several older games to PC for the first time. This included popular entries such as Halo 3 and Halo: Reach. More recent Xbox releases have also continued to appear on Steam.

Microsoft's current direction does suggest that the company is reconsidering parts of its recent multiplatform strategy. At the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Gears of War: E-Day was confirmed as an Xbox exclusive at launch, despite earlier signs that a PS5 version could be in development.

Forza Horizon 6 is following a somewhat different path. The game will launch on Xbox without a PS5 version, although Microsoft plans to bring it to Sony's console later in 2026. Meanwhile, Halo: Campaign Evolved is still scheduled to launch on PS5 alongside Xbox, as originally announced.

These changes suggest that Xbox may be trying to find a different balance between exclusives, multiplatform releases and its PC business. Leaving Steam, if it ever happens, would be an even bigger step.

Xbox has plenty of major games planned to help strengthen its lineup over the next couple of years. Gears of War: E-Day is expected to be one of the company's biggest releases for the 2026 holiday period, with the game scheduled to arrive in early October.

The company is also preparing to start 2027 with another major release. The long-awaited Fable reboot is currently scheduled for February 23, giving Xbox another major first-party title early in the year.

For now, Xbox fans should treat the Steam report as speculation rather than a confirmed change. Microsoft has not announced plans to leave the platform, and its final PC strategy could still look very different. Still, with Xbox already making noticeable changes across its console and multiplatform plans, its approach to Steam will be worth watching closely.
