Why Ubisoft is shutting down its blockchain experiment after less than 2 years?
Ubisoft will officially turn off servers for Champions Tactics in October, ending a troubled gaming experiment that recently removed its trading features.
Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles, an online tactics game created by Ubisoft that previously featured non fungible tokens, will shut down in October. Ubisoft announced the decision on the official game website and community chat channels. The company launched the game in twenty twenty-four, well after most technology companies had moved away from digital tokens and shifted focus toward artificial intelligence.
Despite early negative feedback from players regarding digital tokens, Ubisoft released two games using the technology in twenty twenty-four. Years earlier, company executives claimed that players simply did not understand the benefits of the technology. Following player pushback, leadership claimed the company was only researching the space and would only release features that offered true value to players. In an official statement, Ubisoft confirmed that the game will sunset, with servers shutting down permanently on October thirtieth. The company stated that the game will remain playable until that date so current players can enjoy the remaining time.
The game had already removed its digital token features earlier this year. In May, Ubisoft announced it was moving away from blockchain features due to underlying infrastructure changes. Soon after, the company disabled the ability to create or trade character tokens, some of which had originally been listed on online marketplaces for over sixty-three thousand dollars.
Once the blockchain features were removed, the digital characters were converted into standard, regular video game assets. To compensate dedicated players, Ubisoft announced that high ranking players from recent competitive seasons would receive rewards in Might and Magic Fates. That digital card game launched in February and also uses external marketplace technology for card trading, showing that the publisher is still experimenting with alternative trading systems.
Outside of its shut down announcement, Champions Tactics rarely made headlines. Its most notable moment occurred during launch weekend, when a matchmaking bug repeatedly forced competitive players into matches against a single player who could not be defeated, resulting in automatic losses.
Community reactions remain divided, with remaining players arguing over whether the project provided genuine entertainment or failed to deliver on its promises.
