Grinding Gear Games teams up with Nvidia to fix Path of Exile 2 bug!
Grinding Gear Games shipped a complete computer setup to Nvidia, allowing engineers to reproduce and fix a long standing Path of Exile 2 crash.
Grinding Gear Games, the developer of Path of Exile 2, helped fix a game breaking Nvidia driver bug by shipping an entire personal computer setup to the graphics company. Despite the long standing issue, Path of Exile 2 remains one of the most popular action role playing games in early access.

The disruptive bug appeared shortly after early access launched, causing the game to pause for twenty to thirty seconds during long play sessions. Affected players lost complete control of their characters, which often led to character deaths during high stakes endgame content. Grinding Gear Games determined that the problem was connected to newer Nvidia drivers released around the time the game launched. After a year and a half of testing, the issue has finally been resolved through a new driver update.

Game director Jonathan Rogers explained that developers found the general source of the problem early on, but Nvidia needed a reliable way to recreate the crash. Expecting Nvidia engineers to play the game for hours until a random freeze happened was not realistic. To solve this, developers created diagnostic tools and recorded gameplay loops to test on studio computers. Eventually, they created a recording that triggered the bug every few minutes.

However, that recording only triggered the crash on one specific computer in the studio. To make sure Nvidia could fix it, Grinding Gear Games shipped that exact computer directly to Nvidia headquarters, complete with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. With the exact hardware in hand, Nvidia engineers were able to see the crash happen and build a working fix.

Nvidia discovered that increasing the shader heap size prevented the crash entirely. The fix was officially released in GeForce Game Ready Driver version six hundred ten point eighty eight on July twenty-eighth. The patch notes confirm that the update resolves long freezes occurring in DirectX twelve mode. Grinding Gear Games celebrated the resolution of the bug, noting that engine programmers can now focus on standard game performance improvements.

This unusual situation demonstrates why personal computer bugs involving specific combinations of hardware and software can take a long time to solve. Without a consistent way to reproduce the problem, graphics card makers cannot easily deploy fixes. Shipping a complete computer setup was an extreme choice, but it successfully resolved a frustrating issue that traditional reporting methods could not fix.
