Lego Batman, the latest addition to the famous Lego games series, that’s well-loved by many. Coincidentally, it is also the first Batman game in a long while. Lego games are known for their juvenility & goofy humour. Although their games are more catered towards young audiences, older audiences also gravitate towards their charm.

TT Games has been making their Lego games ever since 2005, starting with Lego® Star Wars™: The Video Game, which totals to two entire decades of experience. What does a game by them look like today?

PERFORMANCE

BATMAN BECOME BATMAN

Lego Batman follows the story of more than one Batman in a sense. It is closer to an anniversary celebration of mostly the Batman movies when it comes to storytelling. You start off as the child version of Bruce Wayne and follow through with him on an adventure into his story as Batman. Along the way you will meet different companions which you will go on full story arcs with each,
at least for as far as we reached during our gameplay. Of course, there is the Lego spin on events in the story, but storytelling is great in
the game.

The humor lands well; it gets silly just enough;
it doesn’t spend too long telling certain segments; it paces and connects itself well. It is simply well done narrative. Even for someone like me who is barely a casual fan of Batman, I found myself enjoying the different stories and backgrounds
of the heroes and villains in the game quite a bit.

CONSIDER THETARGET AUDIENCE

Gameplay combat felt like the weakest part of
the game for me, and that is not due to any lack
of quality; it was mechanically too simple for me.
Which makes sense considering that this game is catered towards essentially children. The game is inspired by Batman: Arkham Knight when it comes to the style of combat and somewhat in stealth. There’s a roster of characters you unlock and play with, seven in total. Each character has their own unique abilities, and each has their own simple skill tree.

Which you can upgrade by collecting Wayne Tech Chips throughout the world and during missions, where the upgrades are going to improve your abilities. Combat, however, is basically the same despite the characters’ different abilities.
Those abilities are best utilised in exploration and traversing missions. Stealth is another weak point in the game, where in many segments levels are designed in a way that does not allow a stealthy approach.

GOTHAM CITYTOUR TIME

In Lego Batman, story missions are done in linear style levels. The level design is great where every mission feels like it is its own event in a sense.
Of course, as it is a Lego game many collectables are hidden throughout the levels of each mission. Collectables either give you cosmetics or are
the aforementioned yellow Wayne Tech Chips.
Outside of story missions, you have the city of Gotham to roam freely in. Gotham is one of
the game’s strongest aspects, but you have to
go through a lengthy tutorial/prequel before you get to it. The map size is decent, offering a lot to discover and keep busy with.

There are races, challenges, Riddler riddles, collectables and other mini events and puzzles
to complete scattered throughout Gotham city.
It is a place that is fun to explore and find hidden things. The game is geared towards being played in Co-Op. However, most of my gameplay was done in single player, switching between the two different characters in order to use their abilities when needed, and it was fine.

FANTASTIC ART DIRECTION

Visually, the game looks really great both graphically and in its dark atmosphere. Environments are highly detailed especially Gotham City with its strong dark gothic
aesthetic. The world of Lego Batman as a
whole is well detailed, throughout the parts
of the game we played at least. Even the Bat
Cave is a large, detailed place with lots of
things to explore and customize. However,
the game could’ve benefited from more time
in development.

Performance was stable enough for me but
more than once, an enemy I had to defeat to progress would be stuck somewhere hard to
find. The mapped controls on PC felt very awkward, and even with a controller the game
felt clunky to play. Sometimes it even felt like
input was delayed or not registered. However, those were the only issues I had encountered.

ALL KINDS OFFAMILY FUN

Lego Batman is a strong addition to
TT Games roster. It delivers excellent storytelling as well as exploration.
While the combat is designed with children in mind, it still scratches
the itch for action with some of its cutscenes. However, it still has some corners to iron out in the technical sense, which is disappointing since
it asks for the full price of 70 USD.

However, if I were a Batman fan or a parent with a child, I would definitely acquire this game. It would also be a great game for partners especially if one of them is not much of a gamer.
