Why is Geralt returning after all these years?
CD Projekt returns to Geralt of Rivia with a massive expansion that bridges the gap between classic adventures and the next era of the series.
Fans of The Witcher series have a huge reason to celebrate. CD Projekt has officially confirmed that a brand new expansion for The Witcher Three Wild Hunt will be shown off at Gamescom Opening Night Live. This new story project is named Songs Of The Past. It marks the third official expansion for the massive role playing game. Developers expect the game to launch in the year two thousand twenty seven on PlayStation Five, Xbox Series X and S, and personal computers.

This news took a lot of players by complete surprise because the original title came out more than ten years ago. The Witcher Three first released in two thousand fifteen and quickly became one of the most celebrated video games in history. Its earlier expansions, Hearts Of Stone and Blood And Wine, were praised by critics and players alike for adding amazing narrative paths and dozens of hours of fresh content. Now, gamers around the world get to go on one more big journey with Geralt Of Rivia.CD Projekt is working on this expansion alongside Fools Theory, an outside development studio filled with experienced creators. Many team members at that studio previously worked on earlier Witcher titles. Because of that shared history, fans can feel confident that the expansion will match the tone and overall quality of the main game.

Can a ten year old game still bridge the future?
Songs Of The Past puts players right back into the boots of Geralt Of Rivia. CD Projekt shared that the story takes place after the main events of the original game. While it functions as an independent story that anyone can enjoy, company leaders also mentioned that it will help set up the world for the next mainline entry in the series, The Witcher Four. It is not a direct prequel, but it will bridge the gap between the two games in a meaningful way. During a financial meeting, CD Projekt leader Michal Nowakowski explained why the company decided to build a massive expansion for a game that is already so old. He said the main goal was simply to give players a high quality experience that would make them excited to step back into the world of monsters and magic. He acknowledged that the project naturally brings attention back to the series before the next big game comes out, but he emphasized that giving fans a great game was the true driving force.

The company also explained why the expansion is taking longer to launch than originally planned. At one point, the team wanted to release Songs Of The Past in two thousand twenty six. However, leaders decided they needed more time to polish the experience and meet their internal quality standards. Rather than rushing the product out the door, they moved the release window to two thousand twenty seven so the studio could polish every detail.

The secret blade and the promise of greatness!

So far, CD Projekt has kept most plot details quiet. During a special live broadcast celebrating the anniversary of Blood And Wine, developers pointed out a new sword that Geralt will carry throughout the story. Sharp eyed players first spotted this blade in official artwork released during a seasonal spring event earlier in the year. That image showed Geralt resting near a campfire while his good friend Dandelion played a lute for nearby locals. The unusual sword design immediately sparked discussion across online forums.

That exact blade appears prominently in the key art for Songs Of The Past. The studio confirmed that the weapon plays a vital role in the central narrative, but they declined to give away any real spoilers. They want players to discover the secrets of the blade for themselves while playing through the quests.

Regarding the overall scale of the project, CD Projekt confirmed that Songs Of The Past will match the size of Blood And Wine. That is wonderful news for fans, as Blood And Wine is widely regarded as one of the best expansions ever made. It introduced an entire new region to explore, along with fresh characters and many hours of extra gameplay. If this new release offers a similar amount of material, players can look forward to a full sized adventure rather than a small update.

The expansion will also introduce brand new Gwent cards for people who love the popular mini game. On top of that, the team is still working on bringing mod support across platforms for the base game, though no firm date has been given for that tool yet.

The public will get its first real look at the project during Gamescom opening night live on August 25. Fans hope to see the first teaser trailer and perhaps a glimpse of active gameplay. With over sixty five million copies sold, The Witcher Three remains an absolute classic, and this surprise chapter offers a perfect excuse to visit the Northern Realms one last time.
