Capcom's latest sales figures confirm the 2019 remake has finally overtaken Resident Evil 5.

Chris Redfield has been knocked off the top spot. According to Capcom's latest quarterly sales update, the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 has officially become the best-selling game in franchise history, surpassing Resident Evil 5 after years of steadily climbing the charts.

Capcom's previous sales report put Resident Evil 5 at 19.01 million copies sold across its original 2009 release and later remasters on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The company has now confirmed that Resident Evil 2 has reached 19.75 million copies, making it the new sales champion.

For many longtime fans, the milestone feels fitting. Resident Evil 2 is widely regarded as one of the finest remakes ever made, successfully modernising the 1998 classic without losing the survival horror identity that defined the series. It combined the over-the-shoulder perspective popularised by Resident Evil 4 with the slower, more methodical exploration and resource management of the original games, striking a balance that appealed to both newcomers and veterans.

Resident Evil 5, by comparison, remains one of the franchise's most commercially successful but divisive entries. While its co-op action helped it become a blockbuster, many fans view it as the point where the series leaned too heavily into action, paving the way for the even more bombastic Resident Evil 6.

Even so, selling more than 19 million copies is an extraordinary achievement for a game released in 2009. Its enduring popularity is also one reason many fans expect Capcom will eventually remake Resident Evil 5, despite recent rumours claiming there are currently no plans to revisit either Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6.

Resident Evil continued to dominate Capcom's sales charts over the past quarter, occupying seven of the company's top 10 best-selling games. Pragmata led the way with 2.51 million copies sold during its debut quarter, followed closely by the Resident Evil 4 remake with 2.43 million and Resident Evil 2 with another 1.42 million copies. Even Resident Evil 6 continued to sell, moving 710,000 copies to claim the tenth spot.

The series remains Capcom's biggest franchise by a considerable margin, with lifetime sales now reaching 213 million units. Monster Hunter sits in second place at 131 million, followed by Street Fighter with 60 million. Mega Man remains fourth despite years of relative inactivity, while Devil May Cry rounds out the top five, buoyed by the continued success of Devil May Cry 5, which has now sold 14.24 million copies.

Capcom's recent run of critically acclaimed single-player releases continues to stand out in an industry increasingly focused on live-service games. Following the strong reception to Resident Evil: Requiem and Pragmata, the publisher's next major release is Onimusha: Way of the Sword, launching on September 4.

Resident Evil fans won't have to wait long for more from the series, either. Zach Cregger's new Resident Evil film arrives on September 18, while Capcom is expected to follow up next year with the long-awaited remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica.
