Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is giving one of the series' most iconic killstreaks a major new twist, with the tactical nuke now allowing players to escape the explosion instead of sacrificing themselves. The new feature was showcased during the game's latest multiplayer trailer, which also highlighted new animations, underbarrel attachments, game modes, and several other additions coming to the multiplayer experience.

The tactical nuke has appeared in several Call of Duty games from Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, but its core functionality has remained largely unchanged over the years. While the name and required kill count have varied between 25 and 30 kills, players have traditionally been forced to die alongside everyone else when detonating the devastating killstreak. Modern Warfare 4 appears ready to change that.

In the new multiplayer trailer, players who earn the tactical nuke can call in the devastating explosion before attaching themselves to a skyhook and escaping the battlefield. While everyone else is wiped out by the blast, the player who earned the streak is safely carried away from the explosion. To make matters even more insulting for the opposing team, the player can be seen flipping them off as they escape.

The new animation is more than just a flashy way to celebrate a massive kill streak. It could also allow players to preserve a perfect game if they manage to reach 30 kills without dying before activating the nuke. In previous games, calling in the streak essentially meant sacrificing the player's life even after they had already dominated the match.

Modern Warfare 4 instead turns the nuke into a genuine reward, letting players finish their perfect game while watching the entire battlefield go up in flames.

The tactical nuke itself still appears to function much as players would expect, including the iconic siren that plays when the streak is activated. However, it is far from the only new killstreak shown in the multiplayer trailer. One particularly destructive streak appears to be a massive drill charge missile that crashes through the roof of a building before drilling through multiple floors and eliminating anything caught in its path.

Another streak appears to be a heavily armed tank drone equipped with a minigun. Its design is reminiscent of the A.G.R. from the beloved Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, although the Modern Warfare 4 version appears to have a more grounded design. The trailer also briefly shows a futuristic shotgun-like weapon that could potentially function as another handheld killstreak.

Beyond the new streaks, the trailer provides a closer look at several of Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer features. The evolving Kill Block battlefield is showcased alongside Ground War, which appears to continue the large-scale combat format that has drawn comparisons to Battlefield. Players can also expect Apex attachments, which seem to function similarly to the powerful underbarrel weapons featured in some older Call of Duty games.

Riot shields are also making an appearance, with players able to carry them while moving or deploy them as stationary pieces of cover. Combined with the game's emphasis on tactical equipment and slower combat mechanics, the feature suggests that Modern Warfare 4 will retain some of the more deliberate gameplay elements associated with Modern Warfare (2019).

Despite Activision and Infinity Ward's promises of a more grounded Modern Warfare 4, the new tactical nuke animation makes it clear that the series isn't taking itself too seriously. Watching a player escape a nuclear explosion on a skyhook while flipping off the enemy team is hardly mil-sim material, but it could make earning one of the game's most difficult killstreaks more satisfying than ever.
