Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is changing familiar locations in unexpected ways
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation won't simply revisit Rebirth's world, with Meteor changing familiar areas and introducing fresh ways to explore.
Returning to the world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth won't feel like retracing old steps. While Final Fantasy 7 Revelation revisits many familiar locations, Square Enix says players can expect significant changes to the world itself, alongside new gameplay systems designed to keep exploration fresh.
One of the biggest additions is the new FIT system, which functions similarly to the classic Final Fantasy Jobs mechanic. Each playable character has four unique Fits—special outfits that grant new abilities, movesets, and combat styles inspired by traditional Final Fantasy classes. Cloud, for example, can equip a Warrior Fit, while Tifa has a Black Mage Fit, with the remaining Fits for each character yet to be revealed.
Meteor reshapes the world
Speaking to Express, director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that the game's story dramatically alters the environments players explored in Rebirth.
"At quite an early point in the story of Revelation, the Black Materia takes effect and Meteor appears in the sky, and this causes the ground and the earth to change, so there will be changes to terrain in some of these previous places," Hamaguchi said.
Rather than simply sending players back through familiar maps, Square Enix has used these story events to reshape the world. The looming threat of Meteor, the emergence of the Weapons, and the changing circumstances of local settlements all contribute to making returning regions feel distinct from their earlier appearances.
Hamaguchi said the team focused on three key improvements:
"The terrain will be different, there'll be new ways of exploring the area, and there'll also be a lot of new content. Hopefully, I think that should give it a completely different feel to what you were able to explore in Rebirth."
Players will still be able to take on mercenary quests in returning regions, but exploration itself has also evolved. One major addition is the ability to deploy directly from the Highwind airship, giving players greater freedom to choose where they begin exploring. Hunting down the colossal Weapons will also provide new reasons to revisit familiar locations.
Launching in Spring 2027
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2027, though Square Enix has yet to announce a specific release date. With more than a year to go, there's still plenty of time for the publisher to reveal additional details and gameplay ahead of launch.
When it does arrive, Revelation will mark a first for the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The game is set to launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, allowing players on every major platform to experience the trilogy's conclusion at the same time.
