South of Midnight: A Place of Extraordinary Tales
REVIEW BY: Mohamed, Gehad
02 OCT 2025
South of Midnight is not just a daily game you play. You feel & live through it. Once you stepped into Hazel’s shoes, It was clear and undoubtedly going to hit on a deeper level. It mentions grief, pain, death, and life, all covered in this stunning, sinister southern fantasy with a slight gothic touch. You play as Hazel, a young lady fighting to survive a supernatural disaster that has struck her hometown Prospero.
In the chaos, her house is taken away while her
mother is still inside. More significantly, Once you put down the controller, it gives you something to think about. When the screen turns black, it remains in the form of silent moments, emotions, and thoughts. It lets you sit with its topics, characters, and sense of place rather than giving you a clear sense of victory. The game lingers once it ends.
When the Storm Strikes
Hazel enters the hurricane itself, and visits one of the neighbours. She turns in time to witness her mother still inside her home, which has been torn to the ground and carried down the river. Hazel starts chasing after it right away through a storm that’s powerful enough to carry off the entire trailer. She spots a huge creature approaching, and the trailer going further.
The plot of South of Midnight centers on Hazel Flood. A huge storm approaches Prospero, her small town, at the peak of hurricane season. When Lacey, Hazel’s mother, gets stuck at work, Hazel gets anxious and starts preparing to flee, and waits for her mother. When Lacey returns, she asks Hazel to go outside and make sure few neighbours are safe before she comes back.
As a Weaver, Hazel unlocks her magical powers. She can see the threads that connect the universe and use them to cure people who have been abused. She discovers more about her parents and others who influenced her life as a result of this gift, which takes her on this challenging trip. This story, set in South of Midnight, is worth it.

Consistent Pace, Limited Combat

In South of Midnight, the story’s speed and pace are more important than the quality of the skills used. In order to avoid conflict from interfering with the story’s events for the player’s attention, encounters are timed to fit the narrative. The combat is the weakest in the game. While initially exciting, after the first few hours of playing, the combat system becomes repetitive
the game at an even speed, it can be detrimental in making the experience less surprising, therefore leading to the merging of activities related to playing. The playing never becomes completely detached from the experience. It still engages players in exploring the world and the story of characters through the lens of generational trauma.
because it only uses a short number of attacks and skills that hardly change. This is seen when similar fight scenarios start being repeated throughout the game. This can be reduced by the use of different rivals. Temporary setup follows a pattern of battles, puzzles, and explorations that are easy to handle. Even if this consistency is good in maintaining

Enjoyable yet Expensive
South of Midnight is an enjoyable game overall. Playing it is not only fun, but it is also really peaceful. It is actually more comforting than dull because everything has a reassuring sense of familiarity. However, the price seems unreasonable. Based on the kind of experience the game provides, especially the combat.
The cost of 39.99 euros on Steam seems to be slightly on the higher side. Moreover the combat experience itself is irrelevant, as it can be unpleasant as well as weak. If you are in the mood for a relaxed game, then you should still consider playing the game. However, The combat is not the highlight of it
Adventure, Quality, AND Appealing to Beginners
It lacks difficulty, variety, and is eventually repetitive. This fact impacts the title’s potential even while it doesn’t negatively impact the experience.
In spite of this, South of Midnight provides an excellent experience for players who value a story-based game, such as action and adventure lovers.
South of Midnight succeeds in both the visuals and narrative, offering a visually stunning experience alongside a genuinely emotional adventure.
This game stands out in a popular category thanks to its Southern Gothic setting and narrative. Although the gameplay is straightforward to use and welcoming to beginner players.
