They’ve Been Making it For Half A Decade!

After spending nearly five years in Early Access,
Going Medieval is finally getting its 1.0 release. Going Medieval is developed by Foxy Voxel,
a Serbian indie game development studio.
They have been working on the game all the way back since 2018, a long journey for the team behind it!
Going Medieval takes place in a post-calamity world, where civilization has been decimated
by a devastating plague.
Starting from absolutely nothing, your task is to establish a settlement and gradually develop it
into a mighty colony.
Ultimately dominating over other settlements in the region.
And of course, the path to achieve that comes
with all the expected management aspects of
a city-builder/colony-sim style game!

Basically a medieval lord

Going Medieval has most of the bells and whistles of colony-sims. After a decent tutorial, you choose a difficulty, which determines the starting scenario.
You start with a few settlers at in an empty land reclaimed by nature, and you just progress
however you want to; it feels very much like
a sandbox with lots of verticality.
Some minor events take place every now and then, like a bandit attack, a pack of wolves showing up, or a fleeing captive looking for protection.
Other than that, so far, it has been mostly just
up to the player to decide what should happen.
The game balances being in-depth and not punishing well.
There are lots of menus and systems in the game, allowing you to control things, to almost the fine details. Or you can let the game auto-manage its systems while you just point and click.

You wanna be worldwide!

In Going Medieval, your focus is centered on resource management, research, production, renown, defenses, comforts and entertainment. Beyond that, it is very much a sandbox experience. Through some research, we learned that
the endgame for Going Medieval revolves around grand objectives. Basically, once you max out
your renown in any of the available categories,
you can begin to pursue a grand objective.
Some of the grand objectives available
are becoming a religious center or founding
a world-renowned university. You get a few
choices depending on the renown category
you are maxing out.
The voxel people made a voxel game
Going Medieval, which is developed by Foxy Voxel, is a 3D voxel art style game. While it is not
the most vibrant in color or impressive in texture quality, it is pleasant to look at. Menus and UI could benefit from visual improvements, as well as some quality-of-life upgrades, but overall, it does the job while not looking appalling.
However, there are moments when the game does look visually very impressive, like a foggy autumn morning, a sunny summer morning or a winter sunset. The game runs very well from a technical perspective. We did not encounter any issues during our time playing the game.

That's a damn good deal!

Going Medieval is a great game at a great price point. While some of its systems may bother hardcore or dedicated fans of
the genre with some of its systems,
it is a great game for casual fans. I also think it is a good entry point for new players of the genre. It can be very in-depth, but it is also not punishing, providing excellent grounds for players unfamiliar with colony sim games and their complexities.
It allows them to learn at their own pace, not overwhelming them too much.
The studio behind it has stuck with it for
a long time and says that they will continue to add content going forward.
