A Major Leak Fuels Switch 2 Speculation

A leaker with a verified track record has just revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is going to have a display that’s potentially on par with the Steam Deck, and it honestly sounds too good to be true.

Nintendo Switch 2 Leaker Talks Specs.Truth or Fallacy?

We don’t have to wait long for some new info about the Nintendo Switch 2, as a Nintendo Direct showcasing it’s features will air on April 2 in two weeks. However, a leaker had other plans it seems.

Leaker credentials - Suspect or Sound?

A leaker by the name of SecretBoy, who previously leaked some other Nintendo Switch 2 specs that ended up being accurate.

“People should really be prepared for 3 TFLOPs docked and around half that in handheld. I don’t expect people to believe me, but that’s what I’ve heard the
final specs are,”
SecretBoy revealed in a thread on Famibaords.

Over on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, the commenters are thrilled but equally suspicious of the leak.

What of the Nintendo Switch 2 specs?

“120 Hz with VVR (especially with LFC) would be a game changer,” commented user Kieran293. A 120Hz LCD as standard would mean the Nintendo Switch 2 wouldn’t come cheap, and I’m pretty sure Nintendo doesn’t want to potentially ostracise the family-orientated market they have amassed by pricing them out of affording it.

However, I could see there being two different versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 available at launch, with this 120Hz version being the more expensive,
premium option. Either way, we only have to wait another two weeks
to find out for sure when the Nintendo Direct drops.

“I’ve also heard that the screen is a 120Hz LCD that supports VRR though, which is amazing because developers can optimise the handheld profiles of their games with VRR and 40 fps in mind.”

Nintendo Switch 2 launch games leak, kicking hype into overdrive

Metroid Prime 4: Is it a Switch 2 launch title?

According to the leaker, Kiwi Talkz on Twitter, one of these games should be Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which was announced some time ago.

Over the years, Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly has build up a relationship with developer Retro Studios, and possibly has an inside line on the next Metroid title published by Nintendo. Reilly states the reveal will “blow everything else in the direct out of the water.” In a follow-up tweet,
Reilly says, “Nintendo are constantly tweaking directs right down to the last minute but as of now I am 90% certain it will be in the Direct.”

Whether this is concrete information, or speculation, this leak could turn out to be true given how important the franchise is for Nintendo. It’s possible that the next Metroid will be a cross-platform release, but receive an enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch 2, showcasing what the hardware can really do.

In the original trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, it was stated that it would be for Nintendo Switch, so a joint release is a distinct possibility. Nintendo has done this before, most recently with The Legend of Zelda, as Breath of the Wild debuted on the Switch, but was a swansong for the WiiU, also. We’ll all be tuned into the next Nintendo Direct in April in the hopes that we get a glimpse of the next Samus adventure.

Mario Kart 9 and other possible launch titles

In his video, eXtas1s makes some big predictions on third-party titles expected to join Mario Kart 9 in the Switch 2’s suite of launch titles.

“I can say that Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is expected to be one of the very first Bandai Namco games to arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch,” he said.

“There has been a lot of speculation and rumors about Elden Ring and Tekken 8 coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. Well, from what I’ve been told, these two games will indeed be coming to the Switch 2.”

The prospect of Elden Ring, in particular, on the Switch 2 is tempting for gamers who missed out on FromSoftware Inc’s sprawling adventure the first time
around.

But it’s just one of several big-name third-party games that could arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 following launch. These include, according to The Game Post, several huge Xbox titles that could find a new audience on Nintendo’s handheld:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Fallout 4, Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Of course, with the limited power of the Nintendo Switch 2 (possibly similar to that of a PlayStation 4 Pro), it will be interesting to see how games we’re used to seeing on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5-level hardware play out.

While Nintendo’s own first-party titles are sure to be the system sellers for a huge majority of buyers, the ability to competently play third-party titles will position the Switch 2 against handheld PCs like the Steam Deck and whatever handheld the Xbox team is currently cooking up.

Nintendo Switch 2 design and new features

On the surface, the Nintendo Switch 2 looks largely identical to its predecessor,
but there is one key difference:
Switch 2 is bigger!

But is bigger always better in handheld consoles?

In the reveal trailer, Nintendo cleverly showcased the Switch 2’s increased size by comparing it with the current Switch. It will sport a larger display size and thinner bezels. Another noticeable design tweak is the new kickstand. It will cover the entire back of the console and is adjustable so you can view the display from multiple angles. It’s a huge leap from the regular Switch’s restrictive design.

In the handheld world, bigger is increasingly meaning better, with chunky units like Steam Deck OLED ruling supreme, and Nintendo is following the trend. Prepare your pockets because the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t a slim device.

A recent recent leak from accessory manufacturer Genki suggested the Switch 2 would be about one inch wider and a half-inch taller, with a 1-inch increase in screen size.

Nintendo took the wraps off its new console during its latest Direct event, providing us with a closer look at the $449.99 console ahead of its release on June 5th.

Nintendo is building upon the successful foundation it laid with the original Switch by offering a larger screen, more internal storage, and magnetic Joy-Con controllers that can operate like mice. It’s also introducing some new features, like GameChat which lets players make voice calls, screen share, and video chat.

The Switch 2 will retail for $449.99 at launch, or you can buy it bundled with Mario Kart World – a Switch 2 exclusive – for $499.99 through the fall 2025 or while supplies last.

The Switch 2’s screen has another big advantage the OLED Switch: The 1080p screen has a 120Hz refresh rate, double the 60Hz refresh rate of the original Switches.

The Switch 2’s screen is an upgrade from the original Switch’s LCD.

TO SUMMARISE

Nintendo’s mantra with Switch 2 appears to have been “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” While the gaming titan is often praised (or lamented) for its habit of making unexpected decisions, with Switch 2 it’s stuck to its guns and
appears tobeiterating on what worked.

In my books, that’s a very good thing. The original Nintendo Switch is deservedly among the best-selling consoles of all time. It’s an
excellent hybrid machine that carved out an important place
in the market. And has even held its own against more
powerful rivals.
