DARK HUMOR IN VIDEO GAMES

Dark humor is often used as comic relief to lighten the seriousness of what is usually considered taboo or offensive in society.

It is utilized across many forms of media, including movies, TV series, animations, comedy skits, and even video games.

Video games have also employed dark humor through morbid themes, satirical storytelling, and cynical characters with a certain charm.

Dark humor can consist of jokes that can be highly offensive, racist, politically incorrect, sexist, homophobic, and even blasphemous.

The jokes are controversial, but most human beings tend to find them funny despite their derogatory, insulting, and offensive nature.

In this article, we examine what makes dark humor so compelling and why it is used in games despite its controversial nature.

MORBID THEMES

Video games that amalgamate dark humor center on themes involving pain and death,
violence and trauma, which are usually not laughable subjects, but are still popular.

Dark humor often depicts real-life suffering,
but laughing at the pain is one of the ways people cope with it. Video games make light of these tragedies by using fun characters
and witty dialogue to mask the suffering.

DEATH AND VIOLENCE

One of the most popular games known for its dark themes and morbid situations is Postal 2. A game that requires players to perform mundane tasks while also allowing them to create carnage, leading to absolute chaos. Players can walk in houses, pee on people, and even use a machete as a boomerang.

The main character is simply known as Postal Dude. He does regular tasks in a place known as Paradise. But weird things happen in this town, and it can very quickly lead to carnage and death. The game features absurd forms of weapons, such as using a cat as a silencer for a gun or an explosive teddy bear grenade.

MASKING TRAUMA

Postal 2 is banned in at least 5 countries for its extremely violent and explicit content in the game. However, the game did not get any less popular despite its controversy.

From the strange town of Paradise in Postal 2 to the post-apocalyptic land of Pandora in Borderlands, there is much absurdly cynical humor that explores morbid themes.

Tiny Tina, a sadistic and wacky 13-year-old who makes bombs, is later revealed to have witnessed the brutal torture of her parents’ deaths, which explains her wacky behavior.

Despite the character’s traumatic backstory, she masks her trauma through an eccentric and loud personality that reflects the dark yet humorous aspects of the game.

A PARODY OF SOCIETY

A form of dark humor is calling out society’s irony through parody. Life-simulation games like Sims make a mockery of consumerism in America, focusing on the superficial society that tries to live an absurd “polished” reality.

SOCIAL SATIRE

The explicit humor in the Sims comes from the way characters can die like drowning, burning, starvation, or even electrocution.
It is dark because people do die like this.

The irony here is that the ability to torture or kill Sims is a reflection of how one controls and values life, revealing the true nature of the player if one had ultimate control of life.

POLITICS, RACE AND RELIGION

South Park is a legendary game and TV show that many people enjoy despite its offensive themes and taboo subjects. The characters are cute and funny, but extremely vulgar.

One of the most appalling examples of crude humor is that the difficulty level of the game is determined by how dark the skin color of the character is. A nod to systemic racism.

Stereotypes on race run rampant on South Park as no one is safe from their mockery
of different races, be it black, asian, arab,
or jews. South Park does not hold back.

The parodies of politicians and jokes about tragic events are part of South Park’s dark, satirical portrayal of society. It reflects on the bleak reality of life in a humorous way.

DARK CHARACTERS

One of the darkest characters in video game history is known simply as “The Lamb” from the Cult of the Lamb. An adorably cute lamb that is tasked with leading a satanic evil cult.

The irony of the sacrificial lamb being a wolf in sheep’s clothing is what makes the game funny yet unsettling, as the lamb amasses followers in a village for a demonic power.

The cute lamb performs sacrificial rituals on the devoted followers, practices cannibalism, and even delivers sermons to increase their faith in the cult to strengthen the colony.

It is down to the players on what kind of cult leader they want to be. The juxtaposition of adorable visuals with macabre and sinister antics creates a unique comedic dark tone.

CYNICISM

One major aspect of a dark character is their cynicism. An exemplary cynical character is the squirrel Conker from the game Conker’s Bad Fur Day. The game follows an alcoholic and vulgar Conker who serves only himself.

The game was released for the Nintendo 64 in 2001. The game was designed as an adult alternative to the family-friendly games of that era and is still well-known till today.

Conker the squirrel’s story is just about him trying to get his hungover self home to his girlfriend, Berri. He loses his way and ends up in an unknown land, gets sidetracked by his greed for money, luring him into trouble.

Conker faces absurd situations with apathy, unaffected by violent brutality and immoral decisions. He becomes king, but at the cost of his girlfriend and regrets his selfishness.

ANTI HEROES

Conker can also be considered an anti-hero. Anti-Heroes could not care less about being the good guy; they are in it for themselves.

What makes them dark characters is what or who they are willing to sacrifice to get what they want. They usually develop narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies due to their past.

None better exemplified than Trevor Phillips, the volatile and unpredictable character in GTA V, with paranoia and a traumatic past.

Trevor is the quintessential anti-hero who is extremely intelligent and incredibly loyal to those he cares about. The moral ambiguity
in his character deeply resonates with fans.

AN HONEST REFLECTION

Despite the fun and amusement dark humor brings to video games, it is also a reflection of the mindset of players. Some people do not enjoy the dark themes in these games.

Some of the games mentioned above have also been banned in certain countries due
to their insensitivity towards some taboo subjects, although they are just games.

Throughout the article, we discussed aspects of what makes dark humor so compelling to gaming audiences. But not everyone is a fan of such humor, as it can be a bit much.

One has to wonder: Is dark humor funny to us but not to others because, deep down in ourselves, we are also scarred individuals with darkness within us? Food for thought.
