THE WOMEN IN POWER:THE ONES WE FELL IN LOVE WITH WHILE GAMING
In the early days, most female characters in any form of media were often portrayed as figures of damsel in distress, and games were no different. But lucky for us, we evolve,
and so does the media around us.
Following our first part on this profound topic, we highlighted that the list in Part 1 could not possibly do justice to these influential figures. So the only logical response to this is to make a second part to shine a bigger light on more
beloved gaming personalities. Follow us on this extended DLC on trying to appreciate gaming’s most beloved woman.

Aloy: Horizon
Created by: Tarik and AJ
Date: 20/04/2026
Aloy’s story begins as an outcast trying to find herself and prove to her people and to everyone playing that nothing has to be
the way that it is.
You first take control of her as a kid who goes off alone, wandering around a cave. Highlighting her bravery and curiosity from the second you start playing.
And that bravery does not fade with age.
The more you play, the more she matures into
a capable woman with an important purpose
and a reason to keep going.

“I’m not afraid of what I am”
– Aloy
From no one to someone
The reason players resonated with Aloy is that the journey she embarks on is one centered around self-discovery. She is not just fighting for her survival. She is fighting for the truth. At her core, she represents the universal
human desire to belong.
Everyone at some point in life feels like they were the odd ones out. But contrary to us, her loneliness was systemic.
We watched her evolve from a child
who was avoided like the plague to the person everyone relies on,
which is a twist of fate all of us rooted for.
But even if we were to put all that emotion aside. Her brawn alone, while taking down Machines 10x her size with ease, puts her in
the heart of every action yearning gamer.
Redeem Yourself

Kassandra: AC Odyssey
If charisma were incarnated into a gaming figure, it would take the form of Kassandra of Sparta. While players had the choice of her or Alexios as the protagonist,
we all knew she was the favorite.
Even though she may appear like she has all her shit together, in reality, she hides her own trauma. She copes with her losses through her dry humour, something we are all familiar with.
Yet she manages to bring the right amount of Greek mercenary vibe and “I have seen too many cultists” wit. She is actually funny yet terrifying, which is the perfect formula
for a lovable character.
The one behind the mask
Kassandra is one of those personalities who are brought to life not by their spectacle but
by their voice actors. Talking about her
without talking about Melissanthi Mahut
is a crime in every sense of the word.
Mahut is the mastermind behind the contrast of Kassandra. She gives her the energy of being the smartest person in the room,
but can not be bothered to explain why.
It is that subtle and playful, witty sarcasm that makes the player feel like they are in on a joke with her. Because of that charm, a 100-hour grind turns into a story the players never want to end.

Commander Shepard: Mass Effect
Mass Effect, as a game trilogy, is the best to have ever existed. A major reason why is their protagonists. Players get the option to choose the gender of Commander Shepard at the start of every game.
Where in most games this option doesn’t carry that much weight, in this game, it is an entirely different thrilling experience. While the male commander is your usual brute,
Femshep elevates the Mass Effect story experience to a whole new level.

Emotional attachment
In Mass Effect, playing as the female option of Commander Shepard does not alter the story,
but its impact. As female commander Shepard, players sometimes experience the unique pressure of being a woman in high-stakes
military situations.
Constantly being reminded of the fact that
you are a woman, which really gets you in
the mood to bust some balls. Not to mention
the random flirting from every man you meet.
And all that gets brought to life by the talented voice actor Jennifer Hale, who gives Femshep
the emotional depth that wraps everything up
into a package everyone adores.

Senua: Hellblade
Senua may be the most underrated female lead in video game history, yet she is the most wisely written. Her journey through Helheim is one that
is filled with metaphors of mental health
and struggle.
She is not portrayed as strong in the normal sense of the word, as her strength stems from her choice to keep moving forward despite
everything happening to her.

An experience like no other
Hellblade heavily explores the world of mental struggles. It uses a sound design technique called binaural audio that simulates the voice of one’s inner thoughts. You are not watching her struggle; you are literally trapped inside her mind with her.
This created a level of empathy never seen before in games that is almost overwhelming.
Anyone who has played Hellblade and also experienced anxiety or grief finds a champion in Senua, because in many ways, at the end of her journey, she does not find a cure.
She learns to live with it. Her impact validates
the struggle of anyone who has ever had to fight
a war just so they can get through the day.

Cirilla: The Witcher
Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon is the heartbeat of The Witcher 3. While in the game, you play as our hunk of a man, Geralt, but the story at its core is about Ciri. The story describes her as a rebellious child just wanting to live freely in her own life. But that does not stop her from being a badass who still worries about disappointing her adoptive father, Geralt.
What is so special about Ciri?
What makes Ciri’s bond with the player unique, compared to all the other characters that were listed before, is that the connection was built through the lens of a parental bond.
As you play as Geralt, you see Ciri grow up from
a frustrated teen into a woman claiming her own agency. And it is that kind of growth that influences the player to care more about the victories of a supporting character than their own high score.

The final honors
All these characters are a living testament that the most influential figures in gaming, whether it be male or female, are defined by their impact and depth. Not just appearance or combat status.
These figures inspired generations of gamers before, and they will still inspire new generations to come. Their graphics may be constrained to their time period, but their impact is timeless.
