THE MOST TRAGIC NPCS THAT DESERVED BETTER

Stories in games produce lasting memories because of the characters who shape them.
Yet many NPCs remain unforgotten but have not received the spotlight they deserve.
Some are overshadowed by the main plot, some meet tragic ends, and there are others who hide deep emotional tragedies beneath the flawed surface.
This article is a memorial to a few standout characters whose arcs have touched players deeply, yet were met with unfortunate ends before their stories could be fully told.
Stories ended because of blinding loyalty, sacrifice, and loss. Yet they all had one
thing in common, a life ending too soon.

The tragedy of Sif and Artorias

Dark Souls is a type of game that delivers its narrative through visual lore and profound storytelling. Lore that is found through items, ruins, and forgotten battles. Every boss you fight and every character you meet hides
a tale to be told.
But there are a few that are as powerful as
the story of Sif and Artorias. A story about
a knight and his companion sacrificing each other for the other’s protection, both in life and death. Their stories unfold through discovery rather than dialogue.
This creates a deeper emotional connection with the player, making their fate even more heartbreaking.
Loyalty that led to loss
Sif was a small wolf. He was a loyal friend to Artorias, whom he followed into the Abyss on
his last mission. When Artorias plunged into the Abyss, he used all the strength he could muster to defend Sif until his dying breath.
His shield kept Sif safe even as the dark
corruption took hold of him.
By the time you reach Sif, you encounter him guarding Artorias’ grave with a sword in his mouth. He attacks the player only to warn him and keep him from the same demise his old master faced. This is one of the few rare
moments in a FromSoftware game where
you fight an enemy that does not wish you
harm. The fight alone carries tremendous emotional weight, which truly shows how powerful a story can be when told even without dialogue.

Tess’s sacrifice
The world of The Last of Us is built on human flaws, and that feeling of loss you get hit by right as the game starts. Every character that exists in the game was modeled by a world full of denial, harsh choices, and trust issues.
Tess was a character who influenced Joel’s
life after the outbreak.

She was portrayed as someone very close to Joel, knowing him better than anyone on so many levels, and pushing him to make those harsh decisions when
he hesitated. Although her presence
in the story was brief, it set the tone
for the adventure ahead.

Did her story end too short?
Tess is a survivor who understands the rules of the world she lives in and knows when to push back. From the moment she made her presence known, it felt like she had so much
to offer. Her intelligence and confidence,
not to mention her perception of trust.
This suggests there is going to be a deeper story waiting to be told. Yet it all ends way
too quickly. The second she reveals that she has been bitten, you feel the sudden shift
of emotion. Even though making her final
stand did allow Joel and Ellie to escape,

which gave the journey a purpose that went beyond simple survival, it ended a relationship that was heavily underdeveloped.
Others say that the sacrifice was necessary,
as it was setting the emotional weight of
the whole journey.

Taka’s price for war
Ghost of Tsushima is a tale of honor, survival, and the cost of conflict. A story full of people, each responding to war in their own unique way. Taka represents the everyday person caught in the crossfire, making him stand apart from all the other NPCs.
He is not a warrior. He does not possess any shred of confidence. He just wants to protect his sister and contribute to the fight for his home. These qualities make his arc one of
the most relatable in the game.

Growth interrupted by a sickening death
Taka starts in Ghost of Tsushima as a gentle craftsman who questions his own strength,
yet pushes himself because he wants to help the people he cares about. The more time he spends with Jin, the more he starts to believe he can conquer his fears, and players see
the early signs of a braver version of Taka
taking shape. But that journey was cut short. His death halts his growth in a way that is painful and unfair, and you can feel his death rippling throughout the rest of the journey.
It reinforces the brutality of the conflict for
Jin and for Yuna, whose grief later becomes
the driving force in her story.
Taka’s loss closed the door on a future filled with potential. He was a symbol of pure hope
and quiet resilience, and many fans believe
he deserved more time to become the person he was trying to be.
The final tragedy
Some characters fade into the background of the worlds they occupy. Others leave lasting marks, but for a few moments of screen time.
Sif, Tess, and Taka stood out because their stories ended before their potential
could fully unfold.
The tragedies, sacrifices, and lost futures of each of these characters shape the emotional weight of their games. These NPCs prove that even the briefest story can hold the strongest meaning among the thickest books.
