THE GAMING JOURNEY: WHERE FRIENDSHIP BEGINS!

Society has long been drawn to the joy of games. From hunting in the wild and swimming through rivers, from wrestling grounds to racing circuits, humans have always bonded through competition and games. Competing and teaming up with each other are some of the most memorable moments we create with friends throughout life’s journey.

To further understand this, we dive deeper into the experience of entering the gaming world,
the differences in gameplay between co-op
and PvP, and how game design patterns are
used to facilitate online friendships through games.
These factors play a definitive role
in the memories we create with our friends.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and as we enter
a world where we can connect and form a bond with a friend without even having to meet them
in person. Where friendships are made through worlds apart. But what is it about gaming that
is so significant in our lives, and why and how does it create fond memories and friendships?

START GAME

Most people born in the 1990s and after definitely encountered some form of gaming culture during their upbringing, and as the younger generation continues to grow and experience more of this culture, it is clear that gaming has become a key part of society. Through gaming, a bond is built between people that can last a lifetime.

Many of us, when we reach a certain age or face certain circumstances, will not be able to allocate time for gaming, let alone gaming together with friends. But when we look back to how it started,
it reminds us of how much fun we used to have gaming together, especially if we are still in touch with the same friends that we used to game with.

CONNECTING ...

The first memories of encountering video games came through receiving our first gaming device
or through exploring online games. Or if you
are older, you might remember the legendary Snake game on your parents’ Nokia phone.

But the true connection with gaming begins when we relate our interests and passions for games with those we eventually meet in person.

As we enter school and look to connect with new friends, most of us will share our experiences of the games we’ve played so far, hoping others will feel a similar passion and love for those games. This eventually leads to the start of a friendship.

We might also be introduced to new games by our new friends and develop mutual interest in them,
which also further solidifies the friendship.

If you were a console gamer, games like GTA San Andreas, WWE, FIFA, and Need for Speed were legendary games that people still have amazing memories of. If you travel back further in time,
you would find those with shared experiences
of Pokémon, Super Mario, and even Pac-Man.

Once you establish a connection with like-minded individuals through common interests in a game, you become a part of that gaming community, which can open doors to making new friends.
There is always a gaming community for you,
no matter who you are or where you are from.

CONNECTION ESTABLISHED!

Mutual interest, especially in games, is what builds a community of gamers. Games such as Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox are what students these days are bonding over. Just as previous generations had bonded over games like World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Halo, and League of Legends.

CHOOSE YOUR GAME MODE

Different aspects of gaming can provide different shared experiences to each individual and group.
Multiplayer gaming can be classified into two categories: Co-op Gaming and PvP Gaming.

Co-op gaming involves cohesive collaboration,
teamwork, and understanding among players. Successes and failures are both shared by all players as they work to achieve their goals.

ARE YOU WITH ME?

Co-op Gaming builds camaraderie among friends and develops a certain trust among each other.
In this arena, the individual needs to sometimes step up for the team or sometimes take a step back to help a member out. To coin a phrase by
the three musketeers, all for one and one for all.

The essence of the co-op gaming experience is to plan, strategize, delegate roles, and find solutions together. Iconic games like Left 4 Dead 2, PUBG, and Minecraft are co-op games that have given many gamers enjoyable experiences playing alongside their friends and teammates.

Whereas PvP gaming creates healthy competition as players are put up against one another in battles, conjuring up the competitive spirit,
tense rivalries, and a whole lot of banter.

Both game modes deliver unique experiences in the gaming world, but are equally memorable
and fun. It boils down to the group dynamics
and what is preferred by each individual.

… OR AGAINST ME?

Player vs Player gaming (PvP) does not just create memorable moments within friendships but also invokes a healthy competitive spirit and banter.

Wins and losses develop strong character-building and problem-solving skills that become essentially valuable as one learns the intricacies of this world.

Games like NBA2K, Counter-Strike, and Mario Kart are some of the famous games that are known to have the best Player vs Player gaming experience.

CHECK FOR UPDATES!

Traditionally, video games required people to be in the same physical space, but as technology has evolved, so has game connectivity. We can now easily game together regardless of distance.

With the rise of social media, friends can connect across multiple platforms. Games have adapted
to the current culture and are designed to give
a space for gamers to connect within the game.

Games nowadays are designed to apply four main elements of a process to develop connections among friends. The elements are classified as:
Proximity, Similarity, Reciprocity, and Disclosure.

ROUND 1

Proximity is when a game is purposefully designed to include a designated space for players to chat, allowing them to get familiar with one another.  This will break the ice and initiate conversations.

FINAL ROUND

Reciprocity is the mechanical engine that solidifies friendship. Games provide a medium of exchange within the game itself, such as trading in-game currency and gifts. Players can help each other
out in the game, but if there is no reciprocity,
even with similar interests, the friendship will
most likely dissolve and not develop further.

Similarity is about players sharing experiences. Players become comfortable when they can
relate to one another, be it within the game
itself or real-life events outside of the game.

Disclosure is the final element that indicates if
the players have passed the first three stages. During this phase, players will relate not only
their gaming experiences but also experiences
in life as well. Over time, as they build trust
and get closer, they become more than just gaming friends, but friends in real life too.

GAME OVER ...

The journey of gaming friendships is truly special. Whether you are teaming up to defeat the final boss or just having fun playing casual matches,
the shared time and experience playing together create an undeniable bond of happy memories.

Celebrating big wins with or against each other, laughing off poor losses, and sometimes just sharing life problems while gaming are part of
the beautiful memories we make. It is this part
of life’s journey that we fondly look back on.

Where to next…!
