THE BRILLIANTMASTERMIND:HIDEOKOJIMA

Hideo Kojima is a highly renowned name within gaming. Why is that? For the simple fact that Hideo Kojima has had a massive impact in this industry. Not only has he been a great part of delivering unique projects, but also genuinely genre-defining ones.

His success is not only attributed to his creativity, but also to his extensive experience of nearly four decades in the gaming industry.

At the time of writing, he is still heavily involved in highly anticipated games, those being “Overdose” and “Physint.”

Kicking into Metal Gear

It all began when Hideo Kojima started working
at Konami, a video game publisher.
At the time, working in the game industry was considered
a very low-status job, where he felt the need to even lie about what he did for a living.

He worked as an assistant director on “Penguin Adventure,” the first game he ever worked on,
and then started designing another game called
“Lost Warld” which ended up getting canceled, since it was deemed too complex to run on
the MSX.

Peculiar inspiration

According to Hideo, about a year after he joined, Konami’s instruction was to “Make a war game
like Rambo.” He was against that due to growing up hearing about war, both from his parents who experienced wartime, and others.

He thought of an idea of a “war game” that avoids combat. Inspired by Western cinema like 007’s protagonist James Bond and “The Great Escape,”
he directed the first Metal Gear game in 1987, which shaped the stealth genre as we know it.

Whilst these movies separately gave him doubts, such as escaping only, or that infiltration into enemy lines with only a handgun was unrealistic, he took that on and added a flavor of the present day, with a slightly futuristic yet realistic setting.

Was it really a unique game?

Besides the incredible feat of essentially creating
a genre, the game itself showcased a level of cinematic storytelling that was unheard of back then
. It also made Hideo’s aptitude for innovation apparent, given the new stealth mechanics introduced.

He envisioned more of a puzzle game focused on getting around dangerous situations instead of engaging them head-on.  Even his style began to show, with the incorporation of fourth-wall
and quirky humor within a serious setting.

The daring Visionary

Hideo Kojima took inspiration from multiple facets of society. However, he was unconventionally inspired by Western movie culture

and characters, which was pretty much unheard of during his time, especially in Japan. In a sense,
that gave him the edge needed to

think outside the box and take chances with game development.

Connecting the world

So what did that edge over his competition look like?

For starters, his cinematic approach to storytelling always felt genuine. It always fit the natural flow of the game, even if it broke conventional industry standards. Character immersion is guaranteed within games directed by Hideo, and that’s not something many can claim to achieve with their storytelling.

It often feels as if the person playing is the main character who traverses through the world as
the story unfolds. You can count on his direction to build a sense of connection and attachment,
no matter what game he touches. There is also

a common theme in which the games focus on hope and rebuilding a broken society, one way or another. This is apparent in the Metal Gear Solid series as well as the Death Stranding series.
In both cases, you are striving to rebuild

and connect the world, overcoming any challenge that comes your way to the best of your ability.
In his work, he always manages to truly capture the essence of the experience, even if the game
is not meant to be, such as “P.T.”

Unmatched innovation in game design

Their distinctive characteristics & nature set them apart from the rest of the industry, and for that reason, they always capture the attention of gamers worldwide.

These characteristics could be regarding story, gameplay, progression, balance, but most of all, emotion and feel. To not delve into much detail, the main point is that innovation runs rampant when Hideo Kojima is involved. Surely you are starting to notice a pattern already as to why everything this guy touches is talked about so much.

Instead of taking you through awards related to his work, whether those are Guinness World Records or otherwise, we will take a quick example to analyze.

Usually, when a game is canceled, it is because funding has run out. Or maybe because there is no interest in it in the industry. Or even because it actually hurt gamers in a certain way, causing it to lose support. But there are always exceptions,
of course, and Hideo Kojima is somehow always
an exception to the rule.

“P.T.” was a demo of a brand new Silent Hill game, named literally “Playable Teaser.” It was directed and designed by Hideo Kojima in collaboration with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. This game, however short, got massive attention from a lot
of people. It was dubbed by many as one of
the best horror games of all time.

It truly was both terrifying & extremely complex, with an incredible atmosphere and great ideas. Ideas that unfortunately never came to fruition, mainly due to Konami and Hideo Kojima’s falling out. This mere demo made such an impact that it is still talked about today, even theorized that it could be related to one of Hideo Kojima’s future projects.

When Guillermo del Toro was once asked what the experience was like with the game, he said, “We had a great experience and had great story sessions with hundreds upon hundreds of designs. Some of the stuff that we were designing for Silent Hills, I’ve seen in games that came after.”

He thought that they had a remarkable game on their hands and incredible ideas, calling it a real shame that it was not happening and that it made no sense whatsoever.

“We are aiming for a game that will make you sh*t your pants.”
– Hideo Kojima

The final piece of the puzzle

Shortly after Hideo Kojima’s split with Konami, Kojima Productions was formed into an independent studio and began work on a new IP, the aforementioned “Death Stranding.”

Is polarization a good thing?

“Death Stranding,” although polarizing, was really a breath of fresh air because of its unique story and gameplay systems. It had odd but intriguing traversal mechanics, some of which had not been seen before, and an interesting color palette.
The main polarization point revolving around

this game was that part of the community thought of it as a glorified walking simulator with repetitive gameplay. While that’s a valid point to a degree,
a lot of people seem to enjoy the experience
and world connection this game brings.

Pioneering the future!

With the formation of Kojima Productions Hideo could finally be himself, uncompromisingly weird, and pioneering the next big hit by taking chances to create new worlds and unforgettable stories.

What’s in store for Kojima?

Hideo Kojima has given unimaginable depth to the gaming world and has left a massive legacy. But it seems that he is not planning to stop any time soon, as recently, Death Stranding 2 was released and has been a great success so far.
As mentioned previously, Kojima Productions is also working on two highly anticipated projects, which are “Overdose” and “Physint.”

“Overdose” is coded as “O.D.” and is an upcoming horror game, directed, produced, and designed by Hideo Kojima.

Interesting! I wonder what this video reminds me of.. And as always, the trailer doesn’t disappoint. Chills-inducing, mind-perplexing, and real chilling Kojima magic.

“Physint” has been confirmed to be a brand new IP and a next-generation action espionage game.
Rings a bell? It should, because “Physint” is actually rumored by the community to be Metal Gear Solid’s spiritual successor, expected to make a debut on the PS6.

The community is dying to see these games come to life, especially since they are rumored to be Kojima’s “brainchildren.” Sounds like Kojima is here to finish the job.
