REAL FRIENDSHIPS BORN IN VIRTUAL WORLDS
I want to talk to you about why people create such strong emotional bonds with people
they meet online while playing games.
Gaming might have started for a lot of people as just a great way to blow off some steam. Nowadays, people do not just log-in to play games, but also to socialize and make new friends from all over the world.
For non-gamers, the notion that people can form meaningful relationships with people
they never met in real life can feel unusual.
For gamers, this is something totally normal. The online world has become something that grants you support and a connection.
We all just want a place to belong. Let us dive deeper into why these relationships feel so “real” and how they often grow beyond just
the gaming world. Hopefully, to a connection that lasts years.

Friends live in your party chat
Online gaming has changed a lot in the past couple of decades. It has become one of
the biggest social networks in the world.
Human beings are very social and need interaction with other humans. It is very understandable that a lot of friendships
are formed while playing games.

Whenever you ask a gamer who their closest friends are, you might be in for a really big surprise. It might not be what you think.
They will probably point to someone they met online while playing a game. If you were to ask an MMO player, you would probably get some guild story. Each genre tells its own story.
Shared gaming goals
We can make friends quickly when we have something in common. We can take online gaming as an example.
We can bond with people while taking out
a big boss in World of Warcraft, winning
a match in FIFA, or just trading resources
while playing Minecraft.
Cooperative interdependence is what we call this concept in game design. You rely on your teammates to accomplish shared goals.
You are building up trust, and as time goes on, that trust becomes a very powerful emotional bond. A friendship that might last a lifetime.
Or something even more beautiful.
Making friends for life

Every day, you meet with the people in your guild, on your gaming server, or wherever.
Slowly, over time, you start to know them better and better, what their lives are like,
and what they love doing besides gaming.
The more you start getting to know people,
the closer you get to them. You might share your whole life with people you meet online.
You can create something amazing that hopefully lasts a lifetime.
You can start with just casually communicating in-game, but after some time, that might not be enough for you anymore. And then what?
You can always start by sending text messages or emails.
Or you could even go to a platform that is specifically designed to keep in touch with your gamer friends.
And if even that is not enough, you can even take it beyond that. To the real world!

Communication is key to friends
Let us just start off with the guilds and clans. They are one of the most important things in any multiplayer game out there. They have so many uses, and communication is just one of them. Try it out if you dare.
Most people just meet up there to talk about
in-game things. What raid is going to be next, or what special event is going to happen this week? You can do so much more. It is all about player interaction.
But what about outside of your favorite online game? How are you going to talk with your friends then? Discord is one example.
It has probably become one of the most used platforms for gamers to talk with their online friends. It has so many options, more than any online game will ever have.

Let’s be social
You have the options to voice-chat, dm
or general text channels. You can really
see the evolution in communication.
The way people keep in touch with their
online friends has really changed a lot.
You can think of a place like Discord as
an alternative to chilling after work,
relaxing in a bar, or in the cafeteria at school on your lunch break. They are not just some gameplay group or a small guild.
They slowly transform into communities of their own. Here, the friendships deepen beyond just playing some online game.

Late-night sessions
When we think of the fun times we have with our online friends, the things that come to mind are often the late-night sessions.
The boss battles that you had to retry dozens of times, or the silly voice chats at 1 AM that make no sense to anybody else.
The glue to any long-lasting and memorable relationship are the memories you share with your friends. Online or Offline.
You experience so many things with your online friends, and those experiences
create your own amazing stories.
Do you still remember when X happened? Those moments might not be very huge,
but they form the start of your friendship.
And every time you talk about those stories,
they grow your friendship bigger and bigger every time you share them.
Beyond the screen
At some point, you might want to extend your friendship to something more than the online world. But how are you going to do that?
Just going to meet someone might be scary for most people. Luckily, you have enough options when and where to meet your
new amazing friends.
Suited and booted
What could be a better place for meeting your online friends than an awesome convention? You could cosplay your favorite character.
You can form a large group of cosplayers,
all wearing outfits from the game where
you met your friends.
Others might meet up at something even more amazing in the life of their friends,
an example could be a wedding.
Why would you not want your best friend
who lives on the other side of the world
to come to your wedding?
You want to share your most beautiful moment with all the friends you have,
be it online or real-life friends.
Why not take the moment and make your online friends your real-life friends?
Or find a loved one to marry offline.

Time to go my friend
One big example would be Mats “Ibelin” Steen.
My colleague Sarovsky wrote an article about Ibelin. You can click here if you want to read her great article. I enjoyed it a lot.
Not the most fun part to read and write about in an article, but it might be one with a very big impact. When something really tragic happens, then you can see who your real friends are and who are not.
You can really see how many people came out to honor him after his demise. It really shows how much people appreciated his friendship when you watch the documentary about him.
It shows the impact that online friendships have on people. So many people showed
up just for the online memorial.
Behind the words
Meeting new friends online is as you can read something that happens a lot. And you can decide for yourselves if you want to just keep
it in-game. You can take it further to Discord, Email, WhatsApp, or anything else you like.
Or you can take the final step, and that is meeting your new friends in real life.

For myself, I made many online friends when
I was younger. I spent hours talking to them, using MSN Messenger back in the day.
And one of them is still one of my closest friends, even after 25 years. I do not really meet him that often, but whenever we talk,
we have a great time hanging out.
So, boot up your game and find a new friend. Maybe you are lucky, and you can find one that you are still friends with 25 years later,
or find one that you can marry.
