It is still worth
going to the shop

Exclusive interview with professional shop owner Russo

What is the weirdest item someone came in looking for?

One of the weirdest requests I have come across was someone looking for a very specific retro.

It was not even an exotic console or game.
It was a region-specific memory card for
the PlayStation 2 that had to be compatible with Japanese imports.

It is not something most stores would normally carry, but it showed me how detailed
and passionate some of
the retro
collectors are.

People are not always out in the world chasing
the best game ever made.” They are chasing the feeling they had when life felt way simpler, when that game was the center of their world.

That request really stuck with me because retro gaming is not just nostalgia.

What is the weirdest item someone came in looking for?

I think nostalgia is powerful because games are not just products. They are tied to some very specific, beautiful memories.

When people walk in, they see more than just plastic and circuitry.

Which reactions from fans have surprised you the most?

People from all ages come into game stores, moms, dads, and even your grandparents.
So we get all kinds of different reactions,
and to be honest, they still surprise me.

You get the old school generation who can really tell amazing stories about how they gamed in their childhood.
All huddled up around the television with all their friends, playing Super Mario Bros on
the NES.

You also have the young kids who will come
in and tell me a story about how the game
we talked about changed their weekend.
And that really hits me right in the heart.

And very once in a while, a big fan walks into
the store and just turns your whole world upside down with excitement. Those are one of the moments you do it for.

Why do people go to extreme lengths for certain collectibles?

People will do almost anything for certain collectibles, and I think it is more than just
the item itself.
It is the story, the memory,
and the feeling people get when they see certain things again after a long time.

It might remind them of a certain beautiful moment in their life,
or it might be your connection to something bigger.

You also have the beautiful thrill of the hunt. Getting ready to hunt for something other people might not have.

What is a question you secretly enjoy being asked?

There is one question I quietly love when it comes up. It is when people ask me which game or character I have a soft spot for.
The one that really stayed with me over
the years, when I got older.

They are not asking about the newest releases or rare items. They want to know something personal. It is like they want me to tell them
a story.
It gives me the chance to remember why I fell in love with gaming in the first place.

Which gaming questions do
the fans love
asking the most?

There are questions that keep coming up,
and I find it very fun to see the different
ways people ask them. They love asking
about the stories behind games.

How did a character come to life, or why
is a world built the way it is, or what
inspired that weird thing we all love?

But those are the things that make something feel alive. You also get a whole lot of “what if” questions. What happens next, or what could have been.

These questions really show that people think outside the box. They love what they are doing, and they want to share it.

What do you admire about the gaming community?

Which game collectibles make fans go ‘I’ll never forget this!’?

Game collectibles that tend to make the fans say
“I will never forget this” are often the ones that have the best memories attached to them.

For a lot of people, it will be classic consoles like the NES or the Sega. It could also be games that defined their youth, games like Doom or Mario.

What I really find amazing about the gaming community is that people are very passionate
and supportive. Even when they are debating
the tiniest details, they still help other people.

You have people who will spend hours playing
a game, arguing over the mechanics and story, while the same people are very often the same ones who will help out a newcomer.

They will help you figure out that tricky level or share tips and advice without being asked.
That mix of friendliness and determination
for gaming is something special.

I also really like how creative the community can get. They make art, build mods, write stories.
Hell, they even organize meet-ups and events.
It is not about playing games, it is about sharing.

How do retro fans shape the trends in gaming collectibles?
Why are some gaming collectibles or merch so iconic?

If you work in a store like mine for long enough, you will begin to see the smallest of patterns. The retro communities are behind a lot of what becomes popular again.

Most often, it starts with a small group of people who are like-minded. They are the ones who never stopped loving these older systems, the boxes with wear and tear from years of use, and the manuals that are all curled up and faded from the scorching sun.

They talk about the old stuff, they are sharing memories, and compare notes. And over time, that appreciation turns into a wave that pulls
in more and more people.

Some merchandise or collectibles take on a life of their own, it is never about the item itself. It is about the amazing story behind it,
the memories that people have with it.

It could have been the very first figurine you ever unboxed, the poster that is still hanging on your wall after 20 years, or that special edition game you stayed up all night for. Your personal history makes it feel bigger and better than just some plastic or paper.

You also have this connection with the whole community. When something becomes iconic,
it is because it clicks with lots of people.
When that happens, the magic starts.

Why do you think nostalgia plays such a powerful role?

If you’re new to collecting, what should people start with?

One way to start collecting could be with consoles and games that really mean something to you. That can be games you played as a kid or game consoles you always wanted. Those familiar items make hunting for them way more fun. It also gives your collection a personal touch. After a while,
you can choose to look into related merch like posters, figurines, and the like. In the end, y
our overal preference is the most important.
