ARE YOU A MORALLY DRIVEN GAMER?!

DISCOVERING THE PSYCHE BEHIND HOW OUR CHOICES REFLECT IN VIDEO GAMES.

We often hear how our life is portrayed by
our decisions and how these can define it. Everything is full of little choices we make
throughout the day without even noticing.
We now see how some video games tend
to use decision-making as a mechanic that may or may not change the outcome of
the story. Those decisions can drive

a different approach, and our mood can play
a big role. All our choices have meaning.
This will unavoidably reflect in the ending
of the game. Join us to discover how our emotions can affect the behavior, actions
and memories of our character, perhaps  changing how we perceive certain things.

Your choices matter more than you think

First, we will need to understand the genre. Decision-based video games, also known
as narrative games, are those in which your choices will impact the storyline. Whether your preferences are morally driven or not then the outcome may vary. Usually, these games bring a situation with two or more options where we choose wisely,

but doing so requires some deeper thought. There might not be enough time to do that.
In most cases, our choices may not be too relevant, but we will discover in later stages of the game that little choices can totally
turn around the game and will often shape the story. We are molding the life of our character and the ending of the game.

GETTING THAT HAPPILY EVER AFTER

There are different types of endings. It can be a good ending, where the hero or main character saves the day. Or a bad ending, where our character dies and never gets
to the goal. Or wild endings that we were not expecting at all.

Whether we like it or not, no matter which ending we get, we will get the feeling that we were part of discovering how the story ends because of every decision that led
us to that particular outcome.

ARE YOU THE HERO OR THE VILLAIN?

One of the most important aspects, at least for gamers who seek a really good storyline and plot, is the level of interaction you have in the game and how this interaction can affect how the story changes throughout.

This is one of the main reasons gamers are exploring these games, along with the fact that you can try several times for a desired outcome. Gamers usually feel a very deep

connection with the protagonist, who often
but not always, is the main character. This
is because all of our choices are tracing
the path, and it cannot get more personal than how this bond is formed.

We get to immerse ourselves in the world
of this hero. However, we should consider that some protagonists are not the hero
in the story we are unraveling.

“EVERYBODY PRETENDS TO CARE UNTIL THEY DON’T”
Chloe Price, Life is Strange

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR FATE!

Another reason why this genre is so popular is that it encourages players to try it again. Would you like to see a different outcome? Would you take another direction? Do you feel like you could have chosen better?

Then you can find out by playing it all over. Maybe choosing differently in high-stress
situations may lead to a different outcome
completely. Whatever the result is, you will have the option to discover what it can be.

This feels like having a second opportunity to redeem yourself. Most of these games  offer several endings. Discovering the one that fits you best will be a rollercoaster of emotions. It could be that you are happy with the first ending you get, or you will
not be satisfied until you replay the game constantly. The choice is yours: whether
to keep chasing the ultimate satisfaction
or to settle for something just “alright.”

WITH GREAT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
COMES GREAT MORAL DILEMMAS

How often do we feel like we are in control of our emotions? The answer is not always something positive. In real life, we decide little things in the blink of an eye, and our feelings usually play a role in it.

The same thing happens whenever we play these games. We find ourselves choosing between the right thing to do versus the easy thing to do. One of the biggest titles that had gamers feeling morally trapped
was 2012’s The Walking Dead. In here we are in the middle of a zombie apocalypse

world where every little decision will impact what certain characters will do in the future, and this can drastically affect how the story unfolds. We will even get a prompt saying:
“character will remember this.”

We also have life-threatening situations like in Detroit: Become Human, where we start the game with puzzling how to save a child who is held hostage, and we must decide whether to risk our own life in a rescue
attempt or to keep ourselves safe while trying to reason with only our words.

Or perhaps we are in a relationship conflict, like in Life is Strange, where at some point we will need to decide whether we support our best friend’s radical views or we try to guide them through a safer path.

For better or for worse, these decisions not only shape our protagonist but also shape how other characters see us. This directly impacts the relationships we build and how our character’s personality develops.

“I KNOW I’M NOT YOUR DAD, BUT IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, I’M YOUR GUY, OKAY?”
Lee Everett, The Walking Dead

The fictional bond that broke online frontiers!

The Walking Dead put storytelling games on the map. This title is loved and admired for its revolutionary narrative and emotional connection with players at a time when most popular games’ focus was on action, open-world gameplay, and sharp graphics. The game delivered one of the heaviest emotional

experiences, focused on relationship building and character development. It tells the story of Lee Everett, a former history professor found in a zombie outbreak. In his journey for survival, he meets Clementine, a little girl who was alone during the outbreak, and who ends up becoming his number one responsibility.

TWD was awarded Game of the Year (GOTY) and won about 90 awards across gaming media. To this day, gamers recognize Clementine and Lee’s bond as one of the most exceptional and strongest relationships built by two characters in a video game.

Is the right to free will reserved only for humanity?

We understand free will as the ability to make our choices independently, without being influenced by external sources. Detroit: Become Human explores this topic from an artificial intelligence perspective. In the year 2038, androids are being treated as personal property. The story follows Connor, Kara, and Markus.

Three androids that gain emotions and get labeled as “deviants.” During the gameplay, we have high-tension moments where our decisions will be key, and each of them can lead to multiple scenarios, where the fight for freedom is our main purpose. Every choice we make will shape the fate of both humanity and androids.

The game received several recognitions for its stunning graphics and motion capture style, and the community loved it for its emotional storytelling and character development. The game also has a high level of replayability, where multiple consequence branches are revealed as the story unfolds.

The focus is your emotional involvement!

The video game industry is ever-changing and ever-evolving. We do not often think that games focused on making the player feel as part of the story will be this loved,
sometimes even more than games filled
with action mechanics focused on power
buttoning.

They bring gamers to tears, and they win awards for their unique storytelling. They became a form of art that gamers seek to adventure in. These games will touch your heart and soul, regardless of whether you
are a hardcore, casual, or a newbie gamer.

The industry has witnessed the rise of this genre. Why you ask? The answer is simple: emotional involvement. We make choices, but the most important thing about making choices is how those choices will make us feel and how they reveal who we are in
the process. It is all about self-discovery.

There is a hidden element in storytelling games that not everyone is able to realize.
Yes, you get highly entertained, it is a video game after all. But you also get challenged and moved, even long after the screen has faded to full black.
