Have you ever enjoyed playing a video game so much that you completely immersed yourself in the characters and storyline? You spend weeks or months journeying through the struggles of the game, grinding to achieve level after level.

Finally, you reach the peak, facing the ultimate challenge. You conquer it and rejoice in triumph. A rush of dopamine runs through your veins as you feel a sense of achievement. But now you are left with a void, wondering, “What now?”

This article analyzes the impact of games with great endings and the aftermath players feel and experience after completion of the game. SPOILER ALERT! Anything you read after this point will most likely contain major spoilers.

A Satisfying End

Some games can deliver gratifying experiences through their overall storylines and gameplay, culminating in an epic ending. A satisfying end
is what most conventional video games aim for, but not every game delivers that experience.

The True Patriot

Snake’s journey culminates in Metal Gear Solid
by having to kill “The Boss,” who turns out to
be a double agent working for the Soviets.

However, this deception was the ultimate ruse against the Soviets, as her defection was just
a plot engineered by the United States Army.
To prove the US’s innocence, The Boss needed
to be killed by her protege. She sacrificed her life and her reputation to prevent nuclear war. Snake pays tribute to her grave that reads
“In memory of a patriot who saved the world.”

The Portal Plot Twist

Portal 2 is one of those games with exceptional gameplay and a storyline that culminates with an undeniably satisfying ending. Portal 2 is regarded as one of the best game sequels.

In the final moments, Chell looks at the night sky and opens a portal to space, dragging both her and Wheatley through. GLaDOS makes the call to save Chell from getting sucked into space.

The ending culminates with the hero and villain from Portal, making amends and reconciling before going on their separate paths.

An Ambiguous Void

Unlike the heroic triumph of Metal Gear Solid or the wholesome ending of Portal 2, some game endings leave players feeling lost or hollow.
An attachment to certain characters grows as you play the game, and by the time you reach the end of the journey, you share their pain.

Protagonists like Lee Everett from The Walking Dead and Joel Miller from The Last of Us are prime examples of characters that take you
on a memorable journey of sacrifice and pain.

Lee’s Ultimate Sacrifice

Lee’s journey comes to an end when he is bitten and infected by a walker while searching for Clementine, as he pushes through the infection and pain to save her from “The Stranger”.

He spends his final hours teaching Clementine to survive, like cutting her hair short to avoid being pulled and using walker guts to mask her scent. She then has to make a heartbreaking choice.

Clementine has to either shoot Lee or let him turn into a walker, making this a moment of heartbreak and sacrifice of a father figure.

Joel’s Dilemma

Joel faces the ultimate dilemma when he saves Ellie from the Fireflies, who intended to kill her for the vaccine, by murdering them as well as the surgeons. Joel eventually has to lie to Ellie, telling her that there are other immune people and that there is no cure.

After going through the journey with
Joel, you can understand why he
had to lie and prioritize Ellie
instead of sacrificing her life for
humanity and the greater good.

As the game culminates, you wonder what you would do if you were ever put in such a difficult situation. The game’s ending is one of the most symbolic examples of moral ambiguity faced by a beloved character. Such endings highlight the story of the game, making it unforgettable.

A Hero’s Defiance

Nothing ends a story like the hero making a final stand, knowing there is little chance of survival, but fighting with pride till the very end.

John Marston in Red Dead Redemption embodies a true sacrificial hero, making the ending one of the most iconic in video game history.

Final Redemption

John returns to his ranch, seeking the awaited peace he longed for. He just wanted to spend his time on his ranch with his wife and son.

The betrayal of Agent Ross leads to an attack on John’s ranch, where John manages to send his wife and son to safety before the ultimate showdown. John takes down as many agents before being gunned down. His sacrifice for his family is avenged by his son many years later.

The “Lone Wolf”

The sacrifice of the Noble Team in Halo: Reach
and the final
stand of Noble Six
will forever be remembered as
one of the most iconic final battles.

After the death of Emile, Noble Six took charge and made sure that the Pillar of Autumn safely escaped planet Reach by operating the mass driver, eliminating as many Covenant Elites as he could, epitomizing the “make it count” ethos of the mission. A bittersweet end to the game.

All’s Well, Ends Well

The end of a great game can leave you thinking and wondering about all the possible outcomes that could have happened, or it could leave you feeling emotional after the end of the journey. A well-written game can never be forgotten.

The hangover after playing these iconic games is a universal experience. Although they are just video games, they can still have a huge impact.
